they are trying to escape there. Interesting fact they tell you on the tour, If they did go West over the mountains from where they are, they would have reached the German border and a large Nazi outpost. The real family took didn't go anywhere near the hills as they went south first.

The names of the notes are taken from solfège (also solfeggio or sol-fa).

It isn't So, it's Sol.

+4
Level 58
Feb 13, 2013
"So" should be changed to "Sol."

The movie, and the real life story on which it is based, took place in Salzburg, Austria. The family escaped Austria to Switzerland, and ultimately ended up in America.

Why hasn't anyone pointed out that, regardless of the correct spelling of Sol in the Solfege scale, it must be So in the song lyrics because "Sol - a needle pulling thread" doesn't make any sense! It must be So because it has to sound like Sew. Please change it back!

people are missing La because they're probably British like me and tried "A song I like to sing." rather than "A note to follow So." I personally had never heard the second version, I'm assuming its an American thing. Great Quiz though.

Sol is the correct way to do it, but If I'm not mistaken (which I might well be, I've only seen it once), in the movie they actually say "so".

(Unless the ´l´ is supposed to be silent, in which case, please disregard this.)

Looking into it, it seems that the "official" spellings of many of the note names depends on whom you ask. (Look up 'Tonic sol-fa,' and 'Solfege' for a lot more than you probably ever cared to know.) Sol also sometimes is rendered so or soh, while Do is sometimes rendered doh. And, there are a number of other variations...

No, no, no...you have the lyrics all wrong. This is what it's supposed to be;

DO...... the stuff... that buys me beer...

RAY..... the guy that sells me beer...

ME...... the guy... who drinks the beer,

FAR..... a long way to get beer...

SO...... I'll have another beer...

LA...... I'll have another beer...

TEA..... no thanks, I'm drinking beer...

That will bring us back to...

(Looks into an empty glass)

D'OH!

Can you please make it so that those of us who type in "Sol" get the same credit as those who type in "So" for the second to last line ? The "L" at the end of "Sol" is silent and should be spelled properly as "Sol" I believe. thanks

It makes no difference. To type "Sol" you have type "So", so you'll get the answer before you hit the L.

Actually, the family was from Bhutan, but the film takes place in the Kamchatka region of Russia. At the end, they all get beamed up to the Starship Enterprise, which flies directly over Swiss airspace. Hence, the flag of Switzerland. (I can't believe I have to explain this stuff)

I would change Sol back to So. Who cares if the notes are taken from "solfege," isn't this based on the lyrics from the film? The lyrics are clearly "So" not "Sol" and "Sol" does not sound like "sew" so it's confusing.

and googling to subject reveals that both are in common use and not just in the lyrics of the song in the film, but on musical sites about teaching notes and intervals, as well. So, it would make sense to change it back.

I love the song, but I've always thought that the lyrics for la were originally just a placeholder. The songwriter got stumped on la, but the lyric for ti almost wrote itself. So the songwriter wrote down "a note to follow sol" and figured inspiration might hit later, but it never did.

As I've seen a few other people point out, even though correct spelling is "Sol" it doesn't make sense in the context of the song considering she is singling about sewing causing "Sol" to ruin that line. It should be changed back and if you're worried about people moaning just add it into the description for reasoning and if you look up the lyrics of the song it says "so".
