Same here. Was able to guess some from the words - cuisiner, chanter, etc., - and just made random guesses for common verbs. But it still took me several tries to finally get them all.
It's been 50 years since I studied French, but i torture my poor long-suffering wife with my Pepe le Pew-accented French, which may explain why more of it hasn't disappeared. 27/27 with 3:05 left.
How could i have missed avoir!! I recognised it, but couldnt remember what it was... (actually tried see and look haha) Also missed drink and count, though i tried calculate for that one. But nager was quite new to me.
You mean Aimer doesn't mean to Aim, and Sortir doesn't mean to Sort? :(
I tried to use Spanish / Latin knowledge to no avail on some too. Lire sounds like Libra so I thought it would be to weigh. And Compter I would think was to buy like Spanish Comprar.
In my case it's because I'm more familiar with Spanish. In Spanish "to smoke" is fumar, so that one was easy to guess. However, "to have" is tener, not similar enough to the French word to be a clue for me.
Woohoo I got them all without a single French lesson! Some guesswork and my basic Spanish knowledge got me through. I want to learn French but the pronunciation is lost on me. Apparently reading it is much easier because when I hear it spoken I can't pick up a single word lol
I loved going to Spanish from French. "You mean, I actually pronounce everything I see written?" French is kind of like learning to play the violin --- beginners tend to sound pretty awful, but it gets better with practice.

Best use of my BA in French ever. :D
23/27 85% only beats 37.4% of the test takers
I feel the same with vouloir
P.S. never really studied english :-)

To sort -> Trier, classer
Lire is rather related to liber (the book), and of course library in English.
