Isn't there a division of Virgin now based in the US? I remember reading recently that they were recently ranked as the best American airline

Kalbahamut, the Virgin division is called Virgin America.

So.. do they have fewer than 7.0 million passengers? And what about Hooters Air? :D I think they went out of business...

Yes, Virgin is now on the list. US Airways is off since it merged with American.

It seems they operate flights on behalf of the other airlines (aka as Delta Connection).

As quizmaster said, they aren't their own airline. Much the same as Delta Connection, Aeromexico Connect, Aircanada Jazz etc.

What happened to TWA? Pan Am? Eastern? Continental? Alleghany?
+1
Level 82

Probably bankrupt or merged with other airlines. I know that's the case for at least two or three of those.

Level 81

TWA = bought out by American in 2001

Pan Am = bankrupt in 1991 (Delta purchased some of the remaining assets). New airline under the Pan Am name came out in 1996, lasting until 1998. A third airline using the name operated from 1998-2004.

Eastern = bankrupt in 1991, new airline under the name is planned for 2014 (we'll see)

Continental = merged with United in 2012 - they kept the United name and the Continental tail scheme

Allegheny = changed its name to USAir in 1979

TWA went out of business back in the early 2000's. Their hub was located in St. Louis. They closed their hub in St. Louis in 2003.

Quick and easy. I'm surprised so few people guessed Allegiant. That was the third airline I typed in.

Never heard of them. Maybe they have a stronger regional presence outside of the DC area.

I've never heard of it, either. I live in Alaska, grew up mostly in Washington state.

I guessed it, but I was kind of surprised to actually see it come up. Never flown Allegiant, but they do pop up a lot as the cheapest fare because everything is an add-on (a la Spirit, Frontier, etc.)

I know they fly out of Las Vegas if that's any indication as to their 'region'?
+1
Level 65

They are a small airline that has a limited number of destinations (usually smaller market cities that are geographically close to larger cities). They are a no frills airline that charges a low ticket cost, but then nickel and dimes you to death for everything else.

Wasn't there an article that said 50% of Allegiant flights had some sort of mechanical failure mid flight? Maybe it was on 60 minutes or something.

I just started using Frontier recently. I paid $50 for membership and the fares are so cheap. Similar to RyanAir. $19 to Florida.

Darn, I put Air Alaska, and I didn't realize Aloha was out of business. I don't do much flying.

Is Sun Country still around? I think they are based out of MSP and DFW.
+1

Sun Country is based out of MSP only, not DTW. You may be thinking of Northwest (which merged with Delta); it was based in Minneapolis/MSP but had a hub in DTW.
