They have equator on the flag though, with the star marking Nauru's position just south of it.

Does it have to go through LAND to qualify? If not, then Maldives and Kiribati should be added.

From the instructions: "11 countries have land territory that lies on the equator."

Yep, looks like it has to go through land!

Yes ... just as a couple other players pointed out ... you have left out 2 countries that are indeed located right on the equator (BOTH smaller island nations) ---> the Maldives and Kiribati ... So do you read your messages? And can you please evolve this quiz to a more complete level? thanks we all appreciate it !!

Look at the description of the quiz just below the title. That is why.

I agree. If The Maldives and Kiribati are not on here then Sao Tome and Principe should not be, all of them are island countries.
+12
Level 29
May 22, 2015
The issue wasn't that they are island countries but whether the equator passes through a part of their territory on the terra firma

Why does "DR Congo" bring up Republic of the Congo?
+2
Level 27
Feb 25, 2015
Because the word "Congo" triggers both Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of Congo--a good tip to remember if you're doing the big "Countries of the World" quiz! :)

Missed Sao Tome & Principe. And add me to the list of people who typed in "Equatorial Guinea" only to discover it's not on the equator! I said "Seriously?" (Actually, I think I said one or two other words, too, but I won't repeat them here or the moderator might delete it.)

For the record, most of Equatorial Guinea is north of the Equator, but some of it is south of the Equator (the island of Annobón). However the quiz specifies land, and no part of Equatorial Guinea's land lies on the Equator. Someone may be able to confirm this, but I don't believe any part of Equatorial Guinea's oceanic territory lies on the Equator either, as São Tomé almost entirely separates Annobón from the rest of the country.

Funny how Brazil is better remebered than Ecuador... I mean, sure, it's easily recognizable as a big equatorial country, but the equator crosses in the very upper tip of the land. More than 90% of his lands lies under the equator...

I think many people like myself know that the Equator runs just about into the mouth of the Amazon River and remember that when a quiz such as this calls for it.

10% of a huge country is still a lot, more than the whole Ecuador in fact.

It's covers a relatively long north to south range so if you're really not sure where the equator actually is relative to countries (like me) then it's a pretty safe guess along with Chile for further south and India for further north.

+1

Yes. While the equator passes through Kiribati's / Maldives' territory, it doesn't pass through any land territory (islands or other landmasses) under the possession of the countries.

Got them all, mostly helped by the random bit of knowledge stuck in my head that 7 of the 11 were in Africa, so I didn't keep guessing island nations once I had figured out the 4 non-African ones.
