I would argue Laos has two syllables, at least in the UK we pronounce is a "Lay-os"
+6
Level 58
Apr 9, 2019
I've never heard it called Lay-os - it's pronounced like 'louse' as far as I understand it. (100% brit!)

The 's' is actually silent

French people like to drop the 's' in 'Laos', but I would trust the Laotians to tell us how to pronounce it, and they pronounce the 's'.

French people absolutely do not drop the S in Laos! We do pronounce it as two syllables, though: Lah-os.

I trust the Laotians too, and they literally don't
+2
Level 65
Feb 2, 2024
For a more informative response: Laotians didn't call it Laos, they called it ລາວ (pronounced "LAU") which got transliterated by the French who colonized them as LaoS because the French are weird with silent letters. English speakers got confused and pronounced the S, but Laotians never pronounced the S.

That is true! Samoa is only 50 miles away from AS, so if that is true, Puerto Rico is also 70 miles away from the Dominican Rep. These need to be added or the question needs to be reworded.

How is Laos one syllable? Where I am from, it's definitely pronounced with two syllables.
+2

Apr 2, 2020
Because the S is silent. It is properly pronounced the same way as 'loud' without the D.

If the s is silent, it will still get 2 syllables:

La-o

Except it's not La-o. Like it was said earlier, it's pronounced the same as loud without the "d".

Not bad... for not bordering the US, should really state "within 100 miles but no LAND border with the US". Also good test-making skills: too many of the answers can be teased out by getting other answers right. Like country that ends with "y" (I didn't remember, but I just looked at the other answers and sure enough).

Including dependencies, both of the US and of other nations, we would have Dominican Republic and UK (British Virgin islands) which are within 100 mi from Puerto Rico, and Netherlands (Saba is at ~90 mi from USVI) and France (St. Martin is just short of 100 mi from USVI). In the Pacific American Samoa is less then 100 mi far from Samoa.

This might be needlessly nitpicky, but couldn't you say that, because of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba technically borders the United States?
+3
Level 84
Aug 21, 2021
Guantanamo Bay isn't technically US territory. It's Cuban territory used under long-term LEASE by the US - since 1903. The US sends a rent check every year, but the Castro government has never deposited it - except "accidentally" in 1959.

I think France is with 2 syllables: Fran-ce. Isn't it?

I disagree. France is only multi-syllabic in non-English languages. The link you gave for two syllables (wordhelp.com) disagrees with you stating that France has only one syllable and gives no alternate pronunciation with two.
