Can you accept Formosa for Taiwan? I know it's a former name but if Burma, Ceylon, etc are normally accepted, Formosa should be too.

Why? Just in case someone from the 1930s wakes up from a cryogenic sleep and decides to play this quiz?

After some research, I found that Ceylon was changed in the 1970s and Formosa was changed some time in the mid-20th century, but from what I understand that was more gradual. I guess the names weren't changed as close together as I expected!

Would Socotra classify as an Asian or African island?

Level 78

Oh no, another island argument, it's Cyprus all over again. Socotra is part of Yemen so politically Asian, although the island is geographically part of Africa.

And........discuss

I would say this is akin to French Guiana, Hawaii, Easter Island, etc... it may belong to Yemen, an Asian country, but the island is African as that's where it geographically belongs. This would also make Yemen a transcontinental country.

Macau isn't an island. It contains islands (principally Taipa and Coloane, although the two are now joined by reclaimed land, known as Cotai). The Macau Peninsula is also on an island, which it shares with Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, so all of it is on islands, but just as Japan or Indonesia wouldn't be appropriate answers for this quiz, neither is Macau.

Agreed. Macau isn't an island on its own anymore, since the land between it and Zhuhai was reclaimed. However, still my favorite city I've ever lived in, and glad it's on the quiz!

The official name of the harbour/harbor in Hong Kong is "Victoria Harbour". You can spell the common noun however you want, but the official name has only one correct spelling!

A second part could easily be made - Honshu, Shikoku, Okinawa, Hainan, Jeju, Salsette, Socotra, Mindanao, Timor, Bali, Sulawesi, New Guinea, Christmas Island etc.

Socotra is in Africa, New Guinea is in Oceania. Not sure about Christmas island.

And I am a boy. For the life of me I could not come up with "Wrangel's."

Great quiz, although Novaya Zemlya is the largest island in Russia. Maybe formulate the question to be "Russias largest island in Asia" or something similar

Sakhalin is much larger than either of the two islands that make up Novaya Zemlya.

In Europe, everyone considers Cyprus part of Europe: they're greeks, they speak greek, they was part of the european history since the ancient times, they are members of the Europen Union, they are in strict relationship with all the other european countries... only Jetpunk doesn't consider Cyprus part of Europe

sadly according to quizmaster there is 0% chance of this being changed - there is more chance of an asteroid hitting earth and killing 1000 people apparently
