The route has been necessarily simplified, particularly in South America where years were spent sailing up and down the coasts, though I've tried to give a more accurate impression than some maps which depict a simple forward journey around the continent.

Some of Darwin's opinions of those he encountered have been included for colour and reflect the point of view of one young man born into "the wealthy professional upper class of early British bourgeois society" in the heyday of British colonialism. I hope no offence is taken. (Having personally spent time in beautiful Kerikeri with its lovely people, very close to the Bay of Islands, I can say that my opinions differ from his somewhat!)

Likewise, his support of missionaries has been included as a point of interest, especially given that his publishings on evolution would create much debate over religion. Darwin had originally intended to join the clergy and his initial zeal for science was wrapped up in natural theology whereby a deity is seen acting through the laws of nature. Indeed he initially looked for "centres of creation" to explain the distribution of species on the voyage.

As his ideas on evolution developed Darwin became critical of the Bible as a historical document, though when he finally published his theory of natural selection, which removed the need for intelligent design, he still considered himself a theist. This view subsequently fluctuated, though he never became an atheist. Although Darwin had stopped attending church with his family for decades, preferring to walk instead, in his final years he described himself as agnostic.

Wow, wow, wow! Amazing quiz and animation! The ship crossing the seas is just beautiful, and all the animations, this one included, are so fluid. That's amazing! This is a beautiful homages to this major scientist.

Congratulations for this incredible quiz, and nominated, although I know this nom will be completely useless in a few hour, when QM will consult his emails and notice that overtired striked again. ;-)

Amazing quiz! I seem to remember a few months back you told me about this. It reminds me a lot of my own explorer map quizzes, but better! I especially find the bobbing ship and the ship's logs to be really nice touches, things that I never would never have come up with myself. The map itself is also beautiful. Nominated!

P.S. I think the dates on your table are wrong. The latter two columns say "June 1934 - Dec 1935" and "Jan - Oct 1936," and I'm guessing you meant "June 1834 - Dec 1835" and "Jan - Oct 1836."

Amazing quiz! It would have been great without the animations (which you added) and would have been fine without the log(which you added too) and overall the quiz is very intresting and informative and the additions make it so much more fun :0

Would love to see more quizzes like this as I loved the combination of testing your geography knowledge and learning about history!!!

Maybe do something with silk road/alexander the great, exploration of africa, phonesians, british/spanish exploration of the new world and more!

Enjoy the nomination and spotlight!!

Still a nuisance, though. I’m not sure why it’s happening, either.

The font stack is set to "Arial, Helvetica". It's a well-known mistake to not put "sans-serif" at the end for the benefit of the MANY operating systems that don't include either. Without that guaranteed fallback, some browsers will default to a serif font.

It's also been a bad idea to use this font stack at all ever since CSS added support for embedded fonts. We don't want Windows users to see one font, Mac users another, and Linux/Haiku/whatever users to see yet another. To ensure that everyone sees the same thing, the first font in the stack should be an embedded font. Noto Sans is the safe default sans-serif font. Add "<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Noto+Sans">" to your header template and you can use Google's CDN and bandwidth.

I'm on Windows, so my browser is loading Arial. You may be seeing Helvetica, or whatever the default is for your Linux distro, which may be why you don't have a horizontal scrollbar.

This is a fantastic quiz. Thank you! I have one small correction and one piece of supplemental information. The correction is that the Cocos (Keeling) Islands were not Australian at the time of Darwin's visit. They were "ruled" by one of the initial settlers, a merchant captain John Clunies-Ross (who had been there less than a decade). The supplemental information relates to Darwin's theory of coral reef formation, which you mention in several clues. In the 2018 book "Darwin's Evolving Identity" (which is about this theory), I argue that he did not conceive a version of the theory until he was in Tahiti in November 1835...and I offer an explanation for why he later wrote that he had effectively come up with it in South America. Thanks again for the wonderful quiz.
