nice! but why do you 'hide' the dots until the answer is guessed?
+13
Level 70
Jan 27, 2019
It can be a little crowded when all the dots are on the screen at once, and it's hard to see the surburbs of cities like Milan and Napoli. Also, personally I like to fill in the map by guessing cities :)

Level 76
Jan 29, 2019
what about giving the number of answers per region? it would help try and figure out which cities I haven't guessed after I get stuck
+3
Level 70
Jan 29, 2019
Perhaps I can give the region for each city? At least that way you can have a general idea what you're missing. I will work on it!
+2
Level 71

It would be hard enough even with the dots preplaced... T_T

Level 70
Oct 12, 2020
I've added a column with the number of cities per region. I didn't know the best way to go about implementing it, although I agree it is a worthwhile addition for anyone Italian/expert at Italian geography to get an idea of what they missed. For someone like me who can get 20 on a good day, it may be less useful.

I like this quiz and I'd love to see it done for other countries.

Did you Wikipedia as the source for the population data?

Level 70

Thank you! I've already done it for France and I want to continue this series. Indeed I did use Wikipedia, they have a list here.

I got 11 of the first 12. I'm not going to say anything more about the remaining 88.

You need 100% to get 5 out of 5 points.

Looks like the majority of people here are cheating ;)

It's about to reset so we'll see what happens to the points :)

Don't underestimate the geography nerds. They are fierce! Especially in the early days of a quiz when the keeners/regulars jump on it, which tends to distort the curve initially.

I am surprised Pisa isn't higher. Just about everybody knows the leaning tower though?
+2
Level 88

I somehow forgot about Pisa along with several others that should have been obvious.

After the results of a 2017 referendum, Corigliano Calabro and Rossano merged together on 03/31/2018 into the new municipality of Corigliano-Rossano, population 77 k, should be #72 of this list (en.wikipedia is a little out of date about this).

Wikipedia is the source.

So if Wikipedia hasn't been updated yet, this quiz will not be updated either.

So then @preproman, update Wikipedia first! ;-)

I believe Guidonia alone should be accepted (almost no one uses the complete name) as well as Qartu alone.

Are Italian-Americans on the Jersey Shore more likely to come from there?
+4
Level 73
Jan 23, 2021
Yes, I'm Italian, everybody uses Guidonia, Quartu, Cinisello or Lamezia alone. For Reggio you must specify Calabria or Emilia

Those type-ins work on the Italian version of this quiz, but I forgot to add them here. Will fix!

That straight line in the north heading from NW to SE is interesting. Is there a valley there?
+5
Level 70
Feb 2, 2019
It is interesting! In fact the line runs along the edge of the Po River Valley, and the highway connecting them forms a straight line to the coast.

Afaik, these towns developed into cities being on a historical trade route, then turning to industrial centers and bringing infrastructure, which i guess in turn created more centers bordering the infrastructures
+7
Level 65
Mar 6, 2019
I think you refer to cities and towns that lie along the "Via Aemilia" (Latin for Emilian Route) in Emilia-Romagna region. The fun fact is that that road dates back to Roman Republic age, we were still in the BC side of history timeline!

A little general geography knowledge, some ancient Roman/Italian history, the Renaissance, Ferrari, Oscar Meyer, Shakespeare, and the fact that I crossed the border coming from Slovenia managed to get me to 16. The only one I feel bad about missing is Syracuse. No way I'll ever ace this one... I'll take my 1 point.

As expected I wound up slightly above average: 32. Looking at the list I then saw about 20 I shoulda coulda. Haven't been back there in almost 30 years. I need to get picked for The Amazing Race.

Great quiz, I got only 86 on my first try, and I'm Italian. It's still difficult, even for us, to understand what is a "city" in Naples and Milan's suburbiae!
