Given that this isn't a yellow box quiz, I didn't bother reading the clues; I just typed the name of all of the world's micronations and island countries.

Me too, when I figured out that there is no enough time to read all the clues. I porpose to add yellow boxes but also massively increase the time. PS: The Fiji clue is lame in particular as the very next Country would fit as well (except for the population). Anyway a nice quiz!

I like the quiz as it is. I started by entering Oceania and the Caribbean, but the clues reminded me that I'd forgotten the African islands and European microstates, and I needed the clues to get Brunei and Montenegro.

@Bernard To aid people to get those countries. For instance I managed to get 38/39 without looking at any clue, but then looked at the remaining clue and managed to get Montenegro because of that.

I agree there should be no yellow box, but I think the time should be increased. I could probably just type in most of these countries without the clues, but I was enjoying reading the clues because most of them contained information I didn't know, and it was a nice extra challenge to try to figure out which clue matched which country. But there isn't enough time to do that and enjoy it. At a certain point, you have to just start blowing through all the Caribbean and Oceanian island nations without reading the clues anyway.

Thanks for that - I enjoyed that one way more. I had to use the clues and then do the harder work of remembering which small- and microstates I still hadn't used to match with the clues still remaining. (I missed the population figures on the side, which are pretty big extra clues.)

Great quizz, but I suggest changing the clue 'Country that Bikini Atoll is part of' to 'Country of which Bikini Atoll is part'. A preposition, you see, is not a good thing to end a sentence with.

+2
Level 73
Feb 11, 2022
No. It should be, "This is the type of ARROGANT pedantry FOR which I will not TOLERATE." In order to avoid ending the sentence in a preposition, it is necessary to avoid using the informal phrase "PUT UP WITH," which is a synonym of "TOLERATE." Also, the word "ARROGANT" was misspelled. True pedants should have caught that first.
+3
Level 66
Feb 11, 2022
No. A true pedant would have looked up the work arrant, and seen that it is in fact a word, albeit dated.

That rule was made up in the 1600s by pretentious scholars who insisted that English grammar should go by Latin rules. In Latin, a preposition has to be in front of the word it's referring to, otherwise it literally makes no grammatical sense. In English, that isn't the case, and a sentence can end with a preposition and still be completely comprehensible.

This is also why there's that nonsense "rule" against splitting infinitives. In Latin, infinitives are one word and literally can't be split, but in English they are two words (to speak, to run, etc.), which allows us to easily split the words up without obscuring the meaning.

just nitpicking here: the clue for montenegro being a translation to spanish is correct but it's just a coincidence because of the similarity between old Italian and Spanish. Historically, it came from Venetian and at the time (around XIV century), it just meant "black" in Italian too.

Still, nowadays Italian language has got the "negro" word, but its meaning became exactly equal to the English "n" word.

In Serbo-Croatian, the name of Montenegro is Crna Gora, which means the same thing in English. I believe Monte Negro is Venetian or Dalmatian or maybe even Istrian. Those are all closely related Romance languages fairly distinct from "regular" Florentine Italian. Before Italy was unified in the mid-19th century, it used to be a bunch of little nations each with their own language (there's still a lot of this surviving today - there are dialects of Sicilian that are much closer to Albanian than to Italian).

Just adding my two cents: I think yellow box is the way to go, with perhaps a doubled time limit. Yes, it would make some of the answers pretty tough, but too many of the clues I didn't even end up getting to because wrong guesses on previous questions filled in those boxes. Personally I'd prefer a quiz where I get 50% and learn something to an easy quiz where I get 100% and learn nothing (and yes, I'm aware it's possible to go back and read the clues if I want to partake of their facts, but the fun is in puzzling over the correct answer after reading the fact).
