Why is Rockwell so vital? I'd have thought more important exclusions included Velazquez, Titian, Caravaggio, Poussin, Courbet, Manet, Kandinsky, Miro, Klee, Breughel, etc ad nauseum. This was an excellent quiz.

Names that I actually tried:

Anne Dora

Monty Negro

Stan Marino

Dan Marino

Al Bania

And if I had thought of them, I would have also tried: Jim Braltar, Den Mark, Sir Bia and S. Tonia.

Those 36 Views of Mount Fuji were prints, not paintings.

Agreed. Hokusai was a painter, but the clue for this should say "Created 36 Views of Mt. Fuji prints" not "Painted"
+2

Yes! Most people seem to think "prints" are just copies of drawings or paintings, and don't understand that printmaking is an entirely separate art form (that stands on its own, thankyouverymuch!).

I got it, but the clue for Leonardo Da Vinci is way too vague and could describe any number of Renaissance artists.

There aren't 100 possible answers for "Multi-talented Renaissance man". According to me the clue is pretty obvious (even if vague) and it is also the most-guessed answer on this quiz (96%).

Just some Dutch nitpicking here:

- Mondriaan should be accepted.

- Vermeer's first name is Johannes.

- surname prefixes in Dutch are never capitalized: Vincent van Gogh. The only exception is when you write 'mister/mrs./miss Van Gogh'.

Great quiz otherwise!

I'm not sure what the update was, but various errors and corrections, both major and minor were pointed out in the comments that didn't get fixed: (1) It's fine to include Hokusai with painters, as he did indeed paint, but he did not paint 36 views of Mt. Fuji! They are no more paintings than they are sculptures. They are woodblock prints. They don't even involve paint! (2) Rembrandt van Rijn and Michelangelo Buonarroti being their full names, both surnames should be accepted. (I'd argue that Raphael is fine as is, since that's a pseudonym rather than a first name.) (3) Vermeer's first name is Johannes. He never went by Jan, and how he got that nickname in the art world in later times is a weird story, so while it's great that you accept both, Johannes should really be what displays. (4) Capitalization correction of Vincent van Gogh. // Thanks in advance for considering these corrections!

I know I'm probably entering into "non-sense rant" territory... but here I go

Why, for God's sake, do people think in Frida Kahlo as the maximum exponent of Mexican art? It's beyond me that someone can think of her as a good painter, let alone a great one.

I mean, Diego Rivera, who many people only know as "Frida's hubby", not only was a much much much better painter that her, he often finished her paintings! Many of Frida's best known paintings were actually finished and "beautified" (for a lack of a better word) by Diego! And he doesn't get the credit and respect he's due!

Well, this quiz is only attempting to identify *famous* painters, and Frida certainly was that. She had a tragic young life, a tempestuous marriage, and made deeply personal art that people connect with, particularly Mexicans because of her embrace of her country's folk culture. Diego Rivera is certainly famous too, but I never heard he worked on Frida's paintings; do you have sources for that? Anyway, "good" and "great" when it comes to art will always be subjective, and everyone's list would be radically different.

Nice one, and challeging. Just a couple of caveats: there is a single woman (being "female" her main merit/trait - rewrite the clue focusing on the art, please), and a single non EU/NA painter. Looking at this list one would think that only white western men have produced remarkable art the last millenium.
