Josephine Baker ??????? looks more hysterical than historical.

Josephine Baker was an incredible woman. She was a spy for the french resistance in WWII, a figure of the American civil right movement on top of being a sex symbol. She earned several honors for her work, using her fame and sex appeal to slip into and out of nations in active war, passing on invaluable espionage messages. She adopted children from all over the world in a bid to fight racism. She was proud and openly bisexual. She was the only woman to speak at the 1963 March on Washington.

She's actually a personal hero of mine. Maybe do like a little research before making comments belittling her importance?

Amen to that! She was an amazing woman and trail blazer. Now would be the time to make a movie about her life. I think it would be a perfect role for Taraji P. Henson. She has the talent, looks, and attitude to pull it off.

Not sticking up for @Malbaby, he can defend himself, but I was going to ask who Josephine Baker was as well. I had never heard of her. I suspect @Malbaby was in a similar boat to me.

Thanks for saving me a trip to Google, she sounds like an impressive lady.

i'd give the role to Janelle Monae, not Taraji. and i can't understand how someone could ever question the relevance of Josephine Baker's presence in a list of historical figures

I have to fall into the grasp of those who knew of her but didn't know what she looked like. Looks like she can do the Charleston better than me too.

Malbaby's comment was pretty dumb, but, in fairness, that is also a fairly silly-looking picture.

Put me with the 84% who missed it. I never heard of her. I was trying dancers and actresses from the Roarin' Twenties - but my admission of ignorance in no way is meant to discount her importance.

Well said onegonecat. you've said all I was going to say. and I'm reply to some of the other comments that goofy thing was a part of some of her dance acts.

I have never understood why people like to claim that cultural figures "aren't historical" as though history were nothing but politics and military matters.

Great question, triggered helpful comments.

The mad dance is the Charleston, and Ms. Baker was a world renowned entertainer when it hit.

Look on YouTube for people and groups, mainly in England, performing this and other 20th century dance crazes en masse!

I don't think I've ever seen a photo of him. He looks nothing like I pictured him in my mind. His head isn't shaped like a triangle, his eyes aren't on the same side of his face, his mouth is below his nose... :)

That's what he looked like when he painted many of his well-known "works". In the same way, one should always use photos of young Einstein.

The solution to this seriously tired comment is within reach. At the very top of the page is a button that says "Create". If you think there's a problem with underrepresentation, then, by all means, please have a go at authoring the type of quiz you'd like to see more of.

The problem is that the quizzes which end up featured are still by the big quizmakers, the majority of whom, including QM, are American. And quizzes that aren't featured don't end up being seen by too many people.
