Has it been approved? I’ve just done the quiz and I couldn’t tell where the penultimate answer was supposed to be on the map. I got it eventually by guessing potential answers.

Is an arrow pointing to it possible or does that ruin your map?

+1
Level 66
Sep 8, 2020
Yes, it’s around twice as large. I’ll try to add an arrow.

Yeah, it's still not very visible. Scratched my head for 2 solid minutes not understanding what I was missing! Like, maybe put an arrow or something?

Réunion is ~3000 miles from Antarctica, so France should make the list.

Reunion is as much part of France as Hawaii and Alaska are of the USA.

Level 71
Oct 24, 2020
Is that Réunion included within the circle of Mauritius?
+3
Level 56
Nov 17, 2020
Reunion is like what Guam is for US. It is an external territory.
+3
Level 55
Feb 18, 2021
@AbhishekNS - no, guam is a territory of the us, just like the falkland islands are a territory of the uk. however, french guiana is a department of france, which is similar to us states.
+1
Level 61

My understanding has always been that Réunion has the same legal status as French Guiana. Seems a bit inconsistent for quizzes on this site to regularly include French Guiana as part of France, but exclude the other four overseas regions as "external territories."

Level 63

In that case, Kerguelen would be closer to Antarctica.

Including overseas territories (but not the claims over the 60° S) we would add France (Réunion, Mayotte, TAAF), UK (Falklands, South Georgia & South Sandwich) and Norway (Bouvet), right?

Thanks to this site I have learned that French departments and regions are not the same things as territories. Departments are divisions similar to US states. According to Wikipedia, France has five overseas departments and regions, including Martinique, Reunion, Mayotte, French Guiana, and Guadaloupe. "Each overseas department is the sole department in its own overseas region (French: région d'outre-mer) with powers identical to the regions of metropolitan France." It sounds as though Mayotte and Reunion are part of France just as Hawaii is part of the US but maybe someone from France could clarify the issue. I have no idea what TAAF is. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overseas_department_and_region

Hi ! As a french, I agree with everything you said in your comment, Mayotte and Réunion are part of France (and UE fyi) as Hawaii is part of the US (and should be included in this quiz for me but that’s just my personal opinion).

TAAF is the terres australes et antarctiques françaises (French Southern and Antarctic Lands). It includes the Kerguelen and Crozet Islands, Saint Paul and Amsterdam Islands and some other scattered islands in the Indian Ocean.

Reunion should be included. It is as much part of France as Hawaii or Alaska is of the USA.
+5
Level 45
Oct 24, 2020
No. Alaska and Hawaii are states like the lower 48. But you wouldn't say that Puerto Rico is. Reunion is a department of France, not a administrative region. They are not as much apart of France as Hawaii and Alaska are apart of the USA.
+2
Level 54
Jul 23, 2023
French departments are the equivalent of US states, Reunion and Mayotte are both departments and are constitutionally identical to Paris or Normandy, which means that yes, France should be on this quiz.
