Metro areas are ridculously huge, and some of them shouldn't take Vancouver, the biggest city in BC, it takes the whole surrey and burnaby in the metro area, Vancouver was orignally around 650,000. Victioria, orignally 100,000.

Not sure what your point is, that's what a metro area is. A city population and a metro population are two different things.

The point is that the urban sprawl that is considered in these statistics make no sense. For example, Surrey to Vancouver is about 35 kilometers and considered to be in the same catchment while many of the closer municipalities in Ontario (i.e. Kitchener and Guelph, which are about 25 km apart) are not lumped together.

I'd say metro areas are more useful for looking at population than cities proper are. Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey, etc. are all one continuous urban area. City boundaries are fairly uninformative besides telling you about local bylaws, local city councils, etc.

For example, the city of Vancouver has a smaller population than Edmonton or Mississauga, but is far more important internationally. It just happens to be a "city" made up of many cities, unlike Edmonton which happens to have most of its population within one city boundary. If Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey were to amalgamate, it would make very little difference.

Similarly, Nanaimo has a larger population than the City of Victoria, despite Victoria being a population centre of about 4x the size. It just so happens to be the hub of the built up area of 13 municipalities. Few people would think of Victoria as being smaller than Nanaimo. In fact, Saanich, a suburb of Victoria, is actually more populated than Victoria itself.

As someone from British Columbia, I can say that we pretty much refer to Surrey, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, and so forth, as Vancouver. People from areas of Vancouver sometimes get quite defensive when they're lumped all together as Vancouver, but if you visit Surrey and no other part of Vancouver, trust me, you can say you visited Vancouver.

Agreed. I might just be mad because I guessed Surrey though

Yeah... Surrey and Burnaby are part of Greater Vancouver--I am not sure why you are surprised by this? Imo Vancouver should really include the whole fraser valley including Abbotsford and Chilliwack as far east as Hope as they are all generally part of the same economic/commuting community.

Yeah, it took me ages to get those two as I originally inferred that they were included in the Vancouver area.

I'm not suprising seeing as its warmer the farther south you are. Its not because us Canadians want to be close to the US, trust me. Look at every country in the world, the people live in the best climates and best topographic areas. I don't see any super-sized Chinese cities in the Himalayas.

Not just weather, it has a lot to do with soil quality - get out of the fertile areas and into the Shield, and it's a lot harder to develop.

I think Mississauga gets eaten up by the metro area of Toronto. I always try it on Canada quizzes because its one of the few Canadian cities I know out side of the capitals and the usual suspects. It never works, so I don't bother anymore.

Great quiz, but I noticed one (seeming) error. You didn't have Ajax even though the population as of 2016 was 119,000. It appears this is incorrect unless you count it as part of the GTA. Just thought I would point that out, but otherwise great quiz! :)

Fun Fact: I grew up in the 1970s/80s in a standard subdivision in central Maryland (USA). For some reason however, all of the streets in the subdivision were named after second-tier Canadian cities. I'm sure there's a story there, but I never heard why.

A lot of those "second tier" Canadian cities are named after places in the UK. Could be that the streets are named after the UK locations and there's just crossover?

This quiz is by metropolitan areas as defined by StatCan, so Mississauga is included in the Toronto CMA (https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2016/dp-pd/hlt-fst/pd-pl/Table.cfm?Lang=Eng&T=201&S=3&O=D#)
