There is a real problem at the heart f this quiz. In an industry where women have made more headway than most, only Tina Weymouth and Gwen Stefani feature in this quiz. It's pathetically white male. Where's Blondie, the Supremes, and the Four Tops?

The Jacksons are black, as is the guitarist from Rage Against the Machine (Tom Morello), whose singer, Zach de la Rocha, is Chicano. Tony Kanal from No Doubt is Indian. Slash from Guns 'N Roses is half-black.

Those examples don't really change the overall makeup of the quiz, but the truth is that rock music has been overwhelmingly white and male for the last fifty years. There are certainly enough exceptions to fill several quizzes, but as far as percentages go, most of the best-known bands are all white men. I just looked up the best-selling albums of all-time, and, among bands (not solo or vocal group), 13 of the first 15 bands to appear are comprised exclusively of white men (ABBA and Fleetwood Mac are the exceptions).

I suppose my point is that it's unfair lambast the quizmaker for this. This list is a fair representation of very famous groups. There may well be a problem with minority representation in rock music, but this quiz is not the cause of it.

I tend to agree with Sammy against that opposition. I mean, Alex Lifeson v The Edge, McCartney etc. No contest. Neil Peart could probably play better with one arm behind his back than Ringo Star.

However, if the quiz was about the best voiceovers for Thomas the Tank Engine, I suppose Ringo would edge it over Geddy Lee.

I agree his most famous work and his first recognition was with Soundgarden. But he has been Pearl Jam's full-time drummer for 18 years. He's played on five albums and a dozen major tours. He is always listed as part of the band by the band itself. There is no rule that says a person can only be connected to one band.

Nobody cares if you've heard of it. He's been the drummer in one of the most influential rock bands in the world for longer than anyone else, and they've made a bunch of good music--and sold out arenas around the world--in that time. Whether you took a break from being obnoxious long enough to ingest that is irrelevant.

I'd suggest changing either The Clash or the Sex Pistols answers; the way you've got them now is inconsistent. You name the original Clash drummer, but not the original Sex Pistols bass player. In terms of the music most people know, you've got it backwards in both cases.

Sid Vicious was only a member of the Sex Pistols for a very short time and didn't play on any of their recordings. Glen Matlock was the original bass player and co-wrote almost all of their songs, including all of the famous ones.

On the other hand, while Terry Chimes was indeed the first and last drummer in The Clash, Topper Headon was the drummer for most of their recordings, including most of the songs casual fans are likely to know. (At their induction to the R&R Hall of Fame, Terry Chimes said that Topper was indeed *the* drummer of The Clash…very classy of him).

I have an issue with conflating the idea of "boy bands" (Wham, NKOTB, etc.) with "real" bands (most of the others). The term band means something different in the two cases--so different that equating them in this quiz topic is frustrating. When the term "band" is used, I would expect the groups to include enough instrumentalists to be capable of performing without back-up musicians (although groups like the Beach Boys and the Beatles and many others, utilized studio musicians, they each performed live as a self-contained quintet or a quartet, especially earlier in their careers). Only when one uses the distinguishing term "boy" band (or girl band, as in the case of Spice Girls and the like) should groups of dancing singers crooning the words and music of other people to instrumentation they had no hand in, count as "bands".
+4
Level 66
Jul 29, 2019
wow, of all the things in the world you can have an issue with.

I dont see what the issue is though. A band is a group of people that perform instrumtal or vocal music or a combination of the two. you give and argument (that according to you there should be instruments) but then you start making exceptions, based on what? people you like enough or are famous enough that you dont want to disregard them as a band?

I guess saying music group instead of bands will make you feel better. For most people it is the same though, I think for the ones that feel that a band is about playing instruments grew up with a lot of "I in a band" "Are you in a band?" "I wanna be in a band" And in all those cases it is usally meant a formation with a singer, a drummer, and 1-3guitar players and maybe a keyboard player. The standard band formation.

But you cant keep on describing "a group of people that go out and perform and make music together" people just call them bands.

yea that was very surprising I loved them, one of a kind, and no matter what others say you do not come across that often.

I found gorillaz to be quite refreshing too. ( Older stuff probably too, but I wasnt around when they showed up, so not aware of the impact, but for instance heard hendrix was pretty special and can see how pink floyd was quite different from other bands. And I am sure there are more cases)

Ow and if you want unusual territory. Check out apocalyptica. Metal on 4 cellos, they are pretty damn awesome, atleast the concert I saw of them.

Never heard of it. I think people often go overboard demanding equal coverage for woman ( or black people). For one, sometimes it just doesnt reflect the balance. Like for famous historian people, you cant expect 50, 50 there.

In case of music, yes that isnt a specific male dominated area, so there cóuld ve been more women. But to demand it... what is that gonna do? Noone is gonna complain, ow there are more answer starting with M than with S there should be more S on the quiz...

Regardless of what people say men and women still arent treated equally. But overcompensating to having them more on a random quiz (as opposed to quizzes that are about accomplishments, inventions, bravery etc) is not gonna do anything and feels rather fake to make such a fuss over.

Sorry but this has been bugging me quite a while, everytime I see people making a big deal out of it.

If you really have experienced being discriminated against, whatever the reason, the last thing you will be worried about is if the representation on a quiz is 100% with real life, or needing it to be overcompensated. A list doesnt change what happens in real life...

I have much more to say about this, but this isnt the place, but I had to get it of my chest.
