Nice quiz - but am I alone in that I always considered the caucasus to be a part of the middle east?

Not alone but generally they aren't considered to be Middle Eastern countries, at least not since Russia got involved heavily in the region.

This site generally considers the Caucasus to be part of Europe, as does the rest of the internet increasingly it seems.

Personally, I always considered them to be part of Asia, not the Middle East though. Started to think I might have to give in and join in with Jetpunk's border scheme.

They're featured on the Middle East map quiz. Whether or not they are Asia or Europe doesn't really matter that much except perhaps from a historical perspective since the "Near East," "Middle East," and "Far East" were defined by their relative position to Europe.

I can never see Cyprus as a Middle Eastern country, it is something so completely different from the rest.

It doesn't have anything in common with any other it shouldn't be a middle eastern country.

It's culturally European, geographically in Asia, capiche?

Level 68
Oct 6, 2020
That's what happens when you absurdly put Cyprus in Asia - you end up having to group it with the Middle East.

Level 60

What's so absurd about it being in the Middle east? All those European cultural ties, that your side use as a "proof" that it belongs to Europe, come from it being a former crusader state, the last bastion of Christianity and European culture east of Constantinople. And where do you think the Crusades took place? That's right, in the Middle east.

It's pretty annoying when you accept "riyad", "edinburg", "pittsburg" etc. and we're left with the "h" at the beginning of the next answer

I can accept - although not happily - that Cyprus is counted as part of Asia, but "middle-east" is mostly used in political or cultural context. And in that sense, Cyprus doesn't belong.

It's factually incorrect to call Jerusalem the capital of the Palestinian Territories. It's the capital of Israel, and Israel only. Either the Palestinian Territories should be excluded from the quiz, or they should be included as a separate entry.

+1
Level 62
Feb 20, 2023
The de facto capital of the Palestinian Territories is Ramallah, no? Either the entry for Palestinian Territories should be separated from Israel and Ramallah set as its answer, or else the Palestinian Territories should be removed from this quiz.

The latter is probably the stronger choice. After all, unlike every other entry in this quiz, the Palestinian Territories are manifestly not a country that exists in real life.
