I filled in the Black Sheep / White Sheep Turkmen because the Wikipedia articles were very sparse about that era of history.

Did the U.S. really control that area? I'm skeptical.

Jan 27, 2017
Yeah. Quizmaster uses the term "control" rather than own.

In 2003, the United States overthrew the Ba'ath government, and stationed a bunch of troops to retain control of the country until 2011, when they pulled out. Even though the area wasn't American territory, the United States controlled it.

He may being questioning whether the US truly "controlled" the area --

as in subdued it -- given that there was a rebellion the entire time their troops were present.

I'd say we had more control than many of these empires did.

I think between achaemenids and seleucids should be the alexandrian/macedonian empire, Seleucus starts a new different hellenistic kingdom. Same as you have done separating Timur (a mongol) from the mongolian empire.

Jan 26, 2017
Maybe... In any case Greek, Alexander, Macedon, and Hellenist are all acceptable answers for the Seleucid Empire.

But wouldn't it make more sense to put the Macedonian Empire or Alexander the Great's Empire as either a separate empire, or replace the Seleucid Empire because the Seleucid Empire was a continuation/replacement of Alexander's Empire?

I see a problem with "Persia". Both Achemenid and Sassanid empires are "persians", so to only give the former is a bit arbitrary.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the Umayyad Caliphate that ruled from ~650-750, then the Abbasid Caliphate took over at ~750 (I don't remember the exact date off the top of my head) and ruled until the Mongols toppled it in 1258?

The Abbasid Caliphate dates are wrong; you gave the dates of the Arab's control of Iraq since the Islamic conquest until the mongol invasion, while the Abbasids only came onto the scene in 750 AD. Either change the entry to Arab Caliphate or have separate entries for the Rashidun, Umayyad, and Abbasid Caliphates.

replace abbasid caliphate with just caliphate or add more caliphates because Rashidun, Umayyad, Abbasid, Safarid, Seljuk, Fatamid, Ayyubid, and Gaznavids were islamic nations in control of the area from 651 - 1218

I think if you take into account the brief period that Trajan held mesopotamia as a roman province, You should also differentiate between Caliphates such as Reshidun & Umayyad or Alexander and Seleucids. Furthermore it would have been better if you included Akkadians, Sumerians, Safavids and Afsharid in order to make this quiz more accurate because they held mesopotamia for a considerably longer period of time than Trajan did!!!
