the Netherlands has the biggest port in Europe, so a lot of the Chinese goods enter through there.

That should not be counted as an import by the Netherlands, unless they are importing semi-finished goods for assembly (this does not happen).

china exports more to one city-state than it does to the entire country surrounding Singapore. >_>

Welcome to Singapore, whose lucky location gave its ports global importance!

Not just location. Taxes are extremely low there.

Singapore is the only other UN member with a majority Chinese population. Trade between them is clearly not just due to the port or taxes.

I think they mean the ocean. Not much is typically exported to there.

Interesting how China, for a long time, cut off travel to and from Taiwan, but they are still a massive trading partner. I guess business comes first.

Apparently there's a lot of Chinese sympathizers in Taiwan. I've seen an article in the last year quoting some Taiwanese military official saying he wouldn't fight against China - and I guess that's a fairly common feeling. Kind of like how the Russian demographics of SE Ukraine led to that country being torn apart.

And when you're a small island, 100 miles away from one of the largest militaries/economies/populations/regional controllers ... what are you going to do. Cease relations forever while you wait for ... a reunification with your officials in charge of mainland China ... which is never coming? I assume they aren't as tenacious & willing to sacrifice as the Afghans, or maybe Vietnamese - I don't see how they'd avoid annexation. Just play the game and get rich while delaying/waiting for the inevitable.

They're both rich countries with goods that the other needs. Trade is mutually beneficial despite their political situation.
