Haha, there is also the "directrix" in maths, the line perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of the parabola and equal in length with the vertex to the focus of the parabola.
So is gravity, but the current theory works better than any other competing theory. The previous prevailing explanation of it being vestigial (and serving no function) is also ‘only a theory,’ but the common practice is to assume the correctness of the currently prevailing theory until if/when a more sound explanation arises. If we assume everything to be wrong until proven, we end up in a paradox in which the appendix does and doesn’t serve a purpose because each theory must be wrong, on account of neither being proven.
The appendix in most animals, called the caecum in anything that actually uses the thing, has a very big role in digestion. In humans it is a storage place for beneficial gut bacteria so I would argue it does have a function
Well, I think it's referring to "orthodox" with a lowercase "o", not "Orthodox" with a capital "o", as in "Eastern Orthodox" or "Greek Orthodox." (Not that those names didn't come from the little "o" meaning of orthodox, but you know what I mean...).
Here in Maryland, most duplexes aren't apartments (rentals); they're owned houses, complete with mortgages, etc. They're much like single-family houses, except they have a common dividing wall down the middle, usually built of heavy masonry to try to contain fires.
No. Crucifix is crucifix. If you took a long time to spell it, it's because you don't know how to spell it. What about sphynx? Isn't that an acceptable spelling?
I would assume the term could vary by city, county, state, country, etc. or whatever governing body defines it. Including down to the real estate contract that defines it to the satisfaction of the parties involved.
It's a method of making a white sauce like a bechamel or a cheese sauce. You start by melting the fat (usually butter) then mix in the flour to a paste. That's the roux. You can then slowly add the liquid (usually milk) a little at a time.
In my case, "Sphinx" doesn't readily occur as a valid spelling.
I tried "Sphynx" a couple of times, it didn't take, so I shrugged and figured I was on the wrong track (because the head was a woman's or something? I dunno). "Sphinx" didn't occur to me at all.
I finally did get it, in the dying seconds, after spending a couple of minutes wracking my brains for an answer to that one last question. Finally, with about 3 seconds to spare, I typed "sphinx" in, completely not expecting to get it right, but more out of desperation because I had no other ideas.
TL;DR "Sphynx" should absolutely be accepted as a type-in.
syntax and paradox would be a nice one for this quiz and flummox ( had to check if it was written with and x cause I have only heard it, never seen i written, but it is :) ). (maybe flax, minx, anticlimax)
Yeah, it’s the other way round, a spiral staircase is not actually a spiral, it’s a helix. Because the English language is designed to mess with people.
I thought perhaps that was not the best thread to be tugging at on here. We wouldn’t want this turning into the comment section of a Ben Shapiro YouTube video…
The appendix is now believed to have a function relating to the gut microbiome: Source. The proposition that it has no function seems implausible given that it is often infected, causing serious disease. On the other hand, the coccyx has no known function aside from the common function of blood cell production shared by all bones.
^Paradox would be a good one to add
(Oh! But I didn't miss it in this quiz.)
and the bedrooms and full baths on the upper floor.
