Interestingly there was a third defenestration in Czechia (then Czechoslovakia), of Jan Masaryk in 1948. The moral of the story is not to go near windows in the Czech Republic I suppose.
Funny fact about the defenestration of Prague: when the noblemen survived after the fall, the Catholics said that they were saved by divine intervention; the Protestants said they were saved by a pile of poop that broke their fall.
Love it! There is also such a thing as 'self-defenestration'. Look up defenestration on Wikipedia, and you will find the story of Garry Hoy. One of my favorite unbelievable true stories of all time. A classic!
I only know this word because my college made us all sit through a lecture on the penalties for "defenstration" because seniors kept throwing their couches out the window.
:-/ I typed in "Pilsner" for the beer answer. Is Plzen where that comes from? I feel like I got ripped off. I almost always miss the alcoholic questions.
As soon as I saw the clue, I thought okay, I've got this one. Then nothing happened. Couldn't imagine how it was wrong. Oh well, pop-a-top and go on to the next one.
Why can't you accept defenestrate? Typed it in and it didn't go. Figured it wasn't the answer. Imagine my face when I found out the answer was, believe it or not, defenestrate. Except with an -ion
Charles Bridge (puke) spent a minute trying to figure out what it's called in English. Why isn't the native name included? Karluv most, or a name it's commonly known under in Europe: Karlsbrücke.
I only knew it as Karlsbrücke as well, but I'm not sure it is commonly known that way outside of German-speaking regions. Could you elaborate on that? Karlův most is added now.
No, but most slavic places know it as karlov or karluv or something to that effect. Took me ages to remember it's Charles in English. I kept typing carl's. Bit of a weird translation really.
I'm ashamed to realize only now that the Kafka clue is wrong. "The Metamorphosis" is a novella, not a novel. Maybe changing "novels" to "books" or "The Metamorphosis" to "The Trial" would be in order, Quizmaster?
It would have been less tough if I could spell Czechia, but it's still referred to by it's older and longer name here.
I had a stroke reading that one
