I thought Tyler would be acceptable as a Scrabble word since it's a position in the Masonic lodge, (the door-keeper) but when I looked it up it's not in the dictionary.

Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover were president during the Prohibition Era. They drank alcohol as president?
+13

Drinking wasn't illegal during Prohibition, and alcohol was served at the White House during the Harding administration.

George Washington received a surveyor's license from the College of William and Mary. While he apparently didn't attend classes there, they claim him - go check their website.

Of course they claim him. All organizations seek to expand their influence and power.

I don't get it: If Ulysses is his middle name, then what is the S in "Ulysses S Grant"?
+7
Level 62
Jun 4, 2020
According to Britannica:

"Grant decided to reverse his given names and enroll at the academy as Ulysses Hiram (probably to avoid having the acronym HUG embroidered on his clothing); however, his congressional appointment was erroneously made in the name Ulysses S. Grant, the name he eventually accepted, maintaining that the middle initial stood for nothing. He came to be known as U.S. Grant — Uncle Sam Grant — and his classmates called him Sam."

There was no legal birth registry in the US when Grant was born, and his college enrollment may have been the first official registry of his name. My own grandparents changed their first names on their marriage license because they thought their given names sounded too childish for adults. Those became their legal names since it was the first time their names had appeared on an official document.

Grant was always addressed by his family as Ulysses, and the friend of his father’s who made the Congressional recommendation to West Point simply assumed it was his first name. The S. Came because Grant’s mother’s maiden name was Simpson, and the man thought his name was Ulysses Simpson Grant. Grant kept it that way.

Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit daft to give lots of answers for following questions when you get a question right?

Would it not be better to just have a tick to say you got the question right and then move onto the next question? I literally got half my answers for this quiz from the other answers that came up on previous questions I'd answered.

Wait, wait, wait. So W.'s signature appeal was the whole "you could have a beer with him" shtick....and you couldn't even have a beer with him? Just another reason we should have elected the Rent Is Too Damn High guy.

Well he didn't advertise himself that way, but I recall a very common refrain among people who preferred him to Gore was that W. Bush seemed much more approachable and likeable. A common way to convey that idea when discussing politicians is to say "He seems like the kind of guy you could have a beer with, you know?"
