The Statue of Liberty clue is a gross oversimplification. Bartholdi the sculptor had an entirely different artistic symbolism in mind, a different structural plan, and a different model for his statue of "Progress" that he planned for the Suez Canal. To claim that THAT was the Statue of Liberty would be like claiming that Jimmy Carter and Anwar Sadat were the same man because they each had two eyes, a nose, and a mouth. As Bartholdi himself said, "They are similar only in their most superficial traits."
Not so gross: Lady Liberty’s creator, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, envisioned the Suez Canal as the ideal venue for his mammoth harbor structure.“He was inspired by the Sphinx and the pyramids and the idea you could create something massive that could almost be eternal,” The original drawing of his Liberty Statue has a lady holding a torch aloft in her left hand.Elizabeth Mitchell, who brings Bartholdi’s quest to life in her book Liberty’s Torch: The Great Adventure to Build the Statue of Liberty....... here it is
I have seen this picture hundreds upon hundreds of times over the years. I make my living talking about it with school groups. Again, as state above, Bartholdi said the two designs were similar only in their most superficial traits.
I wanted to put Niger but assumed as I'd already got Nigeria it would be incorrect. Then of course I realised it wasn't the usual type quiz but one with the yellow boxes- doh!
• neoclassical
• giant statues
• holding a torch
• guiding ships
• based on the Colossus of Rhodes
Clearly only the most superficial of traits, as common to statues as two eyes, a nose, and a mouth are to people.
