You have Colombo as a capital, but in the world capitals, you list the capital of Sri Lanka as Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte.

Aced it, and personally am glad to see Colombo instead of Sri JabbaDabba Kotte. I think it ought to be the answer on the World Capitals quiz, too. and Delhi should always be an acceptable type-in for New Delhi. and... there was one other one that often irks me, can't remember now what it was. Neighborhoods inside of larger cities shouldn't be considered capital cities to the exclusion of the actual cities they are a part of. Just IMO.

Yet another case where knowing language phonology helps immensely. You might not know where Porto is, exactly, but tracing the language narrows it down a bit.

I know too much obscure geography to need language phonology for these!

I looked at the first question, assumed it was talking about state capitals without looking at other questions or instructions and quit when I got mad that I couldn't figure out what state I had left out from my attempts.

Are you sure about the Anchorage one? Ottawa and Tokyo are awfully close to the same distance.
+2
Level 92
Feb 12, 2014
I looked it up based on air miles, and Anchorage to Ottawa came in at 3071 miles, Anchorage to Tokyo was 3461. Sure there's some inaccuracy with using air miles, but not likely to overcome a 400 mile differential.

I also guessed Tokyo, Pyongyang and Seoul before Ottawa but a quick internet search reveals plattitude is correct.

Actually, surprisingly, the second closest capital to anchorage is Reykjavik. It's 'only' 3382 miles away.

If you'd take a city (if there was one), from a more central point in alaska, it would've probably been the closest.

There's also Perth in Ontario Canada, and a Perth in New York state, and North Dakota! I'm sure there are others too so lets just agree that when there's just the city we go with the obvious most famous one!

Yup. A great circle path between Perth and Dili is 1723 miles, but is 1875 between Perth and Jakarta.

At least, between their airports.

I definitely need some coffee. I couldn't figure out why Taiwan wasn't accepted instead of Taipei, why Freeport wasn't accepted instead of Nassau, and I was trying all the British Isle capitals for Perth. And, to start off wrong, I was trying all the state capitals near New York. Forget the coffee, I need a nap.
