I don't think Miriam is a form of Mary. It's a Hebrew name, and in the bible Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron. Molly and Polly are forms of Mary, however.

It is one of the trick of "mediums" to say to an audience that they are getting a message from someone named "Mary" or "Maria" or "Marie." The odds are that there are dozens of members in the audience who have a dead relative by that name. Saying it is someone whose name starts with "M" or "J" is another trick since there are so many common English names that start with those two letters.
