Oceania isn't a continent. A continent is a large landmass, Oceania is mostly ocean. Australia is a continent, including the countries of Australia, PNG, and two Indonesian provinces.

It is, but I enjoy quizzes like this because it encourages us to think about things from a different perspective. I recall one quiz, "Countries larger than Texas," that is also basically a list of the largest countries in the world...but then you see that there are only 40 countries bigger than Texas, and it gives you an idea just how large Texas is (and, of course, how large the US is). So you still gain something new, while brushing up on your list of giant countries.

Greenland isn't part of Denmark, nor is it a country in its own right (it is considered to be part of the Danish Realm, but not the Kingdom of Denmark). When Jetpunk says 'Countries' it always means sovereign states, a definition which excludes Greenland.

Oceania is not a continent. If you are talking oceanic continents Australia is part of Australia and NZ is part of Zealandia
+5
Level 58
Dec 21, 2021
Not including New Zealand in the same continent as Asutralia like saying that Japan is not an asian country, UK is not an european country, Cuba is not an american country and so on. I mean, it is not on the mainland but it is part of the continent by many definitions, for that reason, many sources will consider Oceania the continent instead of Australia.

Tbh the whole definition of what constitutes a continent is kinda clusmy. Why Europe and Asia is not just one continent called Eurasia? Lots of sources considers the Americas one continent instead of two.

+1
Level 82
Dec 21, 2021
The closest point of main islands of Japan to the Asian mainland is about 180km. The closest point of Cuba to the North American mainland is about the same. The UK is just over 30km from the European mainland. The closest point of NZ to the Australian mainland is about 1800km. So, it's not really a comparable situation. New Guinea is, NZ not so much.

And while a definition of Asia that takes in Japan mostly includes a large landmass, with just a little sea separating some outlying islands, a definition of Oceania as a continent overwhelmingly takes in ocean. You're right that the definition of a continent is messy, but a continent being a large landmass (whatever the precise definition) is pretty central and Oceania is, as the name suggests, mostly ocean. Oceania is thus a region, which it is often practical to use alongside the continents when categorising countries, but it's by no conceivable definition a continent itself.

+1
Level 74
Dec 23, 2021
And africa is 0 km of the Asian mainland and they are still considered different continents. There is no point in trying to come up with consistent definitions of a category that was never created for consistency. Oceania is a continent, because it makes sense topographicly and pragmaticly to group them together.

I hope so too. But it's been 10 years since Crimea, and people are still promoting the false belief that "Crimea is Ukraine!".

IMO it just hurts the war effort. The reality is that Russia is controlling the borders, and collecting the taxes.

No one benefits from living in a pipe dream. Either you/we are willing to do what it takes to retake the territory by force, and the ugly things that come with that, or you/we aren't.

IDK if it's a lie to themselves, or a state-led attempt to mislead/pacify their ignorant masses.

I'd like to see every Russian on pre-2014 territory forcibly removed from Ukraine. But it hasn't happened. And it doesn't look like it's going to happen without any significant outside intervention. There are something like 40-50 of the most advanced countries in existence supporting Ukraine. We're still waiting for the imminent collapse of the Russian economy, and following uprising that was supposed to happen... 21 months ago?

I miss reality
