I spent two minutes on the first column wondering why Romania doesn't work because I thought the not ending in a vowel clue was referring to the capital...

"A" letter after K, not THE letter after K

What is the difference? I don't get it.

"the": definite article

"a": indefinite.

"the letter after K" refers to the one letter that comes after K.

"a letter after K" refers to any letter coming after K in the alphabet. Could have been Z as well.

for me it comes up with "an L" which makes sense because the "L" sound is "el" and "an" goes before vowel sounds

Ok I thought I was going crazy and that there was so much wrong with this quiz.. And I kept questioning myself huh, but .. consonant.. no, vowel, but huh? it messed with me so much I really started to question if I even knew what a consonant was. (because they werent working, but then when I tried vowel they werent working either ! I thought huh or does it mean something completely different... usually I am not thrown so easily, well not this much anyway haha)

turned out, I missed a key element from the title...

TL;DR I messed up :D

There must be more than 29 countries that were independent before the collapse of the USSR...
+2
Level 82

Nope. Yugoslavia: 7 countries, Czechoslovakia: 2 countries, USSR: 7 countries (in Europe). 45 - 16 = 29. If you add these three + East Germany, there were only 34 countries in Europe during Cold War.

I don't really like these quizzes. It kind of depends on luck in many cases, if the first country you guess in any category happens to be the final answer you can just keep typing in the same answer and zoom through quickly, but if you get unlucky you could have to stop and think about a new answer every time. On the other hand once you do it once and see the answers there's only 4 to remember so it becomes super easy. Easy to cheat for the same reason.

Having to think about the answer with each one? Oh no! What ever shall we do on a quiz site?

I hadn't thought about it until you mentioned it. I suppose just going to the four answers one could quickly type every European country, aided by a quick glance at the clues to shorten the list, until the correct answer appears, and then type it in from top to bottom. If you're only interested in points, then do that and consider it an easy quiz. If you enjoy the chase, do it the usual way and see how well you do. Either way, I enjoy these even though I've never aced one. I came close this time, with time running out before I was able to type in the last answer.

yes, that's true. But my point was more that, in the first category for instance, countries that are not landlocked, you could answer Belgium, then move on the next clue, Belgium, next, Belgium, and finally, Belgium. and you're done in 10 seconds by chance. Or.. you could start with Iceland, then, oh darn, they don't have 4 borders, uh.. Italy.. then, crap.. Rome only has 4 letters... um... uh... uh... uh... Slovenia! then.. crap! uh.. uh.. uh... uh.. uh.. okay Belgium. and end up taking significantly longer than 10 seconds. The quiz could either be a total breeze or almost impossible given the time based on the luck of your first 1 or 2 answers in each category. And if you get unlucky and then run out of time and the answers come up, taking it again is boring because you can just type each answer 4 times. There's nothing to learn it that case it just becomes a very easy memory game.

I just don't particularly enjoy the format.

The format isn't designed for multiple plays, just like, say, any other 'problem' quiz, for example a cryptic crossword, or a riddle, or a rebus, or anything you have to think about rather than just know, or remember or google. Once you have the answer it's easy, I concede that point, but it is much harder on the first occasion you attempt the quiz. This is why I like it, because you cannot cheat on the all-important first try.

It's more about making an educated guess, thinking about which countries are coastal for example -- those tend to have lower average elevation.

Third box for orange should accept denmark, shouldn't it? I mean Denmarks Area surely is larger than Czechia? Of course Greenland itself is not in europe, but I can't see any hint that mentions this.

No, because Finland only has three borders so it is eliminated by the previous clue.
