If Kiribati is the first to celebrate New Year's Day, isn't it the first to celebrate a lot of holidays?

Kiribati and Kiritimati are local renditions of English Gilberts and Christmas, -ti being pronounced S.

wait, -ti is pronounced s? Well, guess I've butchered this language already.

So it sounds like Kiribass, right?

Level 75
Dec 27, 2020
Yes. And Kiritimati sounds like Kirisimas. It's a magical-sounding island, with its four historical villages - Paris, London, Poland, and Banana. Highest point: Joe's Hill, which is not far from the Bay of Wrecks.

There can only be two hemispheres on any given sphere.
+9
Level 84
Jun 23, 2020
Yes... But any given sphere can be divided in many points of reference, creating different hemispheres (this is more visible if said sphere has different attributes across its surface).

With regards of Earth (which has lots of different attributes spread across its surface), it has been divided in two ways:

X-axis (through the Equator): Creating the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.

Y-axis (through the Primer Meridian and the 180º Meridian): Creating the Western and the Eastern Hemispheres.

Which brings us the 4 Hemispheres of Earth.

A part of me has always felt we're neglecting another obvious division Z-axis (through the 90º Meridians): Creating two more unnamed HemispheresAs for naming, maybe the 'Front 90' and 'Back 90' though that sounds a little like golf...

Good point! Maybe we should describe them from now on as the four Giant Quadrants.

Sep 3, 2020
Yes, in fact it does extend into all four quadrants: it has territory with all four latitude and longitude combinations NW,NE,SE,SW. This is a stronger statement than the hemispheres version (that it has territory with all four of N, S, E and W).

I agree, it's a finer point of argument, but there's difference between the four hemispheres and the four quadrants.

Why is "Kiribati" not accepted for Gilbertese?

Two problems with the quiz. On my globe, it says Tarawa, not south Tarawa. This is why I always type Tarawa - not South Tarawa. And also, I - Kiribati is also a main language.

From a quick google, it looks like Tarawa is an atoll which has two settlements on it:

North Tarawa - 7000 people

South Tarawa - 56000 people

So you can't really say Tarawa is the capital as it's not a city.

Kiribati is accepted for the language, idk if this is a new thing.

Kiribati is the first to celebrate every holiday, not just new years.

Not really. Not every country celebrates holidays on the same date. National/Independence day - Taiwan (Jan 1st, GMT+8) and Christmas - Armenia (Jan 6th) are two notable one where Kiribati isn't first.
