A map is flat, the earth is round, therefore the map is only an approximation. The shortest distance between two points on a globe is not necessarily the shortest distance between two points on a map. Not sure that this is the reason, but it could be (4 km is small enough margin that it could be accounted for by curvature).

depends on the projection of the map ;) some map projections display the shortest distance between two places as a line

I got 1069.7km to Italy, 1070.8 to North Macedonia, and 1071.8km to Malta - amazing! For Italy and Malta, make sure you measure from the border about 50km inland in north-west Egypt, not by the coast, and it's a km or so closer than your data for each location!! I love this!

Palestine is not a country.
+23
Level 76

Palestine declared itself a country in 1988, and has since been recognised by the majority of nations (140 out of the other 195). It is also has observer status at the UN, gaining that in 2012 on a vote of 138 countries to 9. Its observer status is the same as Vatican City's and (until 1992) Switzerland's; it would have achieved full UN member status, but for the fact that United States had the power to veto its application (and indeed it had threatened to do so). Nevertheless it is an active participant in UN matters, for example by being a party to over 50 UN multilateral treaties such as the Statute of the International Criminal Court. It agreed boundaries to areas of control with Israel at the 1992 Oslo accords, the boundaries of which I was able to observe first-hand during a trip to both countries in 2017.

JetPunk has its rules. Palestine is not considered a country on JetPunk quizes.

Also calling it "Israel / Palestine" implies that it can only be one or the other. Even if you recognize a State of Palestine, it should be completely separate from Israel as a sovereign nation.

Change this immediately.

correct. The Oslo accords certainly did not agree to create a nation state of Palestine. Look them up. and the accords are not even being followed anyway. Jerry's prone to emotional reasoning on this issue.

Ryan has responded to an accurate, factual, post with claims of “emotional” reasoning, which is not just irrelevant, but incorrect, 12 times over! Yep, faced with 12 statements of fact, he was unable to argue against a single one of them, and so decided to just say that there was “emotional” reasoning instead. Ryan in turn has offered a single fact, which I happen to agree with: the 1992 Oslo accords, at which Israel and Palestine agreed their respective areas of control, did indeed not “agree to create the state of Palestine”. That had already happened, four years earlier.

I declared myself to be a country.

I guess I'm a country now, by Jerry's totally rational unbiased logic. Emotional reasoning is a thing I'm not trying to insult you. Look it up after you look up the word sovereignty. None of your statements of "fact" make Palestine a sovereign nation and therefore don't need to be refuted, even though some are misleading, deliberately or otherwise.

"That had already happened, four years earlier." ... what else happened 4 years earlier then? Did Israel pull out of the West Bank? Did Yasser Arafat conquer East Jerusalem? Did all of the villages of Palestine send delegates to Ramallah and recognize the PLO's authority over them?

Although much of what Jerry is saying is true, Palestine is not a Jetpunk country. We are working with Jetpunk standards where Crimea belongs to Russia and Cyprus is in Asia.
+4
Level 76
Jul 12, 2020
Thanks for acknowledging that "much" of what we have said is true. Which of the points above aren't true, do you think? To address your broader point that if "Jetpunk" says its true then it must be true, I have news for you: the truth is not determined by simply parroting others. Work out for yourself, from first principles, what the truth is. Do your research. If you conclude, after weighing up all the pros and cons, that Palestine is not a country, then I respect your judgement call. But declaring that something must be true, just because someone else has said so, is just beyond ridiculous, as well as a waste of your brainpower. Does Crimea "belong" to Russia? I'd say Yes even despite Russia's dirty tactics in overrunning it. As for Cyprus, I work with Cyprus as being in Asia, not because Dan our quizmaster says so, but because I did my research and came to my own conclusion - which is that both answers are legitimate! My visit there has also helped form that opinion.
+1
Level 82
Jul 12, 2020
If the truth isn't arrived at when someone else declares something to be true then what realities in Israel changed in 1988, beyond the PLO's unilateral declaration? And if Cyprus is really a part of Russia well that shoots all of your arguments about UN recognition in the foot. The UN makes decisions via popularity contest independent of reality and officially they do not recognize that Crimea is part of Russia. So it must still be under the control of the Ukraine...
+2
Level 66
Jul 12, 2020
@jerry eventhough I agree with your point/sentiment, that people tend to take what is in a quiz as fact, it was on the quiz so it must be true. Just because some quizzes for diverse reasons leave things out, that does not change reality about those things. (weird example; a quiz about animal species but I leave out mule, since it is a hybrid that can't reproduce so not officially a distinct species, that does not suddenly stop it from being an animal, it lives and breathes. I have seen reasoning like that* many times though.(*not on the quiz so not an animal)

But you are arguing to "ing" about a point he hadn't made. He never said jetpunk says this so it must be true, quite the contrary, he mentions that in ambiguous/controversial cases this is the standard choice for jetpunk. (Similar to using a source, it might be up for debate, but that is what the source uses.)

To Mr Sifhraven: I respectfully disagree. It is clear to me that Mr ing is not advocating for using his own research to determine an answer, but to simply parrot other people. (Read again: ”We” (who are “we”?) are working with Jetpunk “standards” (whatever they might be)”.)

I don't wish to engage beyond this. I appreciate the offer. But seriously why would I? Palestine is not a sovereign country. Your arguments and standards are inconsistent and non-sensical. You *feel* like Palestine is a country, but that's not enough. We've already hashed this out in comments sections plenty I don't think there's any point taking it to e-mail. Especially if you didn't understand the last comment which was in plain English. On the one hand you place a lot of weight on what the UN has to say about Palestinian statehood. On the other hand, when it comes to Crimea, you are willing to accept reality and ignore what the UN says. The consistent thing to do would be to recognize that in both cases what the UN says is based purely on politics, not reality.

In the comment above you imply ing believes something to be true just because JetPunk says it's true. Your criticism is hollow since you believe that Palestine sprang into existence in 1988, because Fatah declared it

+2
Level 82
Jul 13, 2020
Fatah declaring Palestinian independence did not create a state of Palestine any more than JetPunk declaring Taiwan is a country created a country of Taiwan. You told ing that accepting something is true because someone says it is true is not a means of arriving at truth. But further up the page you told me that while, yes, Palestine was not created in 1992, but that was because it was created in 1988.

I asked simply, okay, what changed in 1988? Aside from Fatah saying something had changed - which you said is not a good way to arrive at the truth. How was Palestine not a country in 1987, but was a country in 1988.

The answer is nothing changed except that the PLO, a terrorist organization that had for decades tried to achieve its goal of destroying the state of Israel through violence, decided to change tactics, renounce violence, and see if they could achieve their goals diplomatically instead. But the West Bank and Gaza were occupied in '87, and in '88

+2
Level 82
Jul 13, 2020
Fatah and Hamas both claimed to represent the ambiguous and undefined nation of the Palestinians in '87, and in '88. The PLO did not exert control over almost any of the territory it claimed to in both '87, and in '88. Especially not the city they claimed to be the capital of their "country."

In 1988, one group of at-that-time-unrecognized thugs in one of the occupied Palestinian territories, who were by no means the sole representative of the "Palestinian" people, and who controlled virtually nothing, and governed virtually nothing, announced that they were the government of the independent state of Palestine.

To you, this created the state of Palestine.

In reality, this declaration had as much weight as if I declared myself sovereign, or if Dan declared Kosovo sovereign. In other words, none.

I said nothing that was nonsense. I'm not playing to any audience. You just failed to follow along. I'll stop vandalizing your quiz now. Sorry.
