I can see why most of these are nerd acronyms, but I don't think LED fits into that category. I think thats a term very many people know by now as those are used pretty often by now.

Lots of people have used the term, but don't know what it stands for. I was surprised recently talking with someone that he didn't know what it meant. That said, it's good to have an easy one to start the quiz.

also doesn't have a lot to do with computers. Sure it's an electronic component, but it's not like they are only used in computers and a computer can work just fine without LEDs. transistors on the other hand are pretty important to building a computer.

How is it that the definition for GNU also contains the same acronym "GNU"? What does it stand for?

It's probably also a backronym, although Microsoft has never confirmed or denied that aspect of the "bing" etymology.

Is a Cathode Ray Tube a real computer term?
+4
Level 92
Feb 22, 2013
Yep, up until the early 2000s most computer monitors were CRTs, before the flat-panel LCDs became cheaper and freed up all that room on our desks.

LED and CRT are a bit iffy, having usage much wider than computers, but they are at least connected with the field.

Very disappointed that RTFM is not here. Roy in the IT Crowd even wears a shirt with RTFM printed on the front. I could write what it stands for, for those of you that don't know, but I might be called before the Committee.

I had 29, time ran out. But I hadnt heard of 8/20 abbreviations I think. Maybe there are old terms or not used here? Some ofcourse you might only come across in certain situations, (like programming perhaps) while others you will hear about anyway like ram.

I missed gnu, dom, crt, sql, eof, isp, irc, (and ssl but somwhere it rings a bell, or more I think I ve seen it, not heard it). Looking at the scores and comments, for some of those im not the only one. All are on the bottom besides isp, and that was exactly the one I think is/would be called differently here.

Some of these are old/outdated (such as CRT or SSL), but I think they are all still in more or less common use today. Well, maybe not CRT :-) Someone working in the field is likely to know them all (at least I did).

Why? It is a light emmiting diode. If you use any of those words it would look/sound silly. Emits light diode would come closest then I guess...

In the '90's and early 2000's there used to be a thing called a PCMCIA card, which was an interface for peripherals on early laptops. It was developed by the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. Since there are so many computer acronyms to learn, someone came up with an alternative acronym for PCMCIA -- People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms.
