I thought New York City was in New York County; the Bronx being a borough of New York. Also, knowing which Orange County would have helped. There are at least 3.

And to be technical, Anaheim is still the largest city in any of the Orange Counties in the U.S.: a few thousand more residents than Santa Ana, 100,000 or so more than Orlando, and many more than French Lick, Indiana or Chapel Hill, North Carolina, or whatever the largest cities in the Orange County in New York, Texas, Vermont and Virginia might be.

Just wanted to say that the largest city in Orange County, Texas is Orange, Texas. That is all.

The same is true in Orange County, Virginia.

The largest city in Orange County VT is Randolph with a population of 2083

yes I recognize that this is 8 years later. NYC has 5 boroughs which are all independent counties (New York, Bronx, Queens, Kings, and Richmond), so technically any of the 5 could have been used for NYC

Just a thought, but I think it'd help if the states each county is in were included in the hint.

Adding states would ruin the quiz. Whose first guess wouldn't be Detroit if they knew Wayne County was in Michigan?

without states I found that most of the quiz I was just typing in random big cities since who the heck knows where all of these counties are?

Agreed. got 14/18, by association of county with city. Either from travel, or tv shows/news. i.e.: Cook county jail.. Chicago. Detroit-Wayne County Airport. etc...

Try taking the county quizzes for each state... :)

It should be yellow boxed so people know the answer. What's the point in just randomly typing big cities to fill in blanks you aren't even looking at? How is that testing yourself?

Am with kalbahamut here. 16/18 and I used exactly the same method.

Yep, agree with that method. Got 15 out of 18. Even without the states name, you can get a pretty high score.

Uh, you might need to brush up on the concept of a quiz.

I only knew one of these. I managed to get 9/18 just by guessing large American cities!

14 here. Most are pretty easy if you've been to those cities or pay attention to news "Xyz county sheriff reported... blah blah..."

I don't think you should put the state. But Orange is completely ambiguous. Both Florida and California have big counties named Orange. And both have a Disney park. So put the state for Orange, cuz otherwise there are multiple correct answers.

How many states have Orange Counties which one might consider the largest Orange County? Now, out of that very, very narrow field, what is the largest city? Maybe you accomplished what this quiz hoped you would: Learning

White Plains is also in Westchester County. It's also a big city.

Yonkers, really?

Sep 23, 2014
Yeah, Westchester (Yonkers) is pretty obscure. Hennepin (Minneapolis) would be a good alternative, as would Shelby (Memphis), or Travis (Austin).

Agree, although I did try White Plains. Westchester County was the setting for the old Trixie Belden books I read as a pre-teen girl in the 1960s. There was never any mention of Yonkers in the books, only White Plains and the fictional town of Sleepyside-on-Hudson.

I knew where Westchester is from the 3000+ counties quiz (New York is one of the first states I memorized) but could not think of any big cities there :/

I only missed three and didn't guess, but I can't claim geographical brilliance. I knew many of these because my kids either lived in these cities at some point or married people from the areas. The Florida ones were easy for anyone who watches national election returns. The only reason I got Cleveland was because of the opening song about the Cuyahoga River from the movie, Major League.

Yeah, many of these I know because of watching election returns. Yonkers I agree is too obscure, and the Texas ones I got by random guessing.

I live in Virginia and it is different. Most states use a different system where cities are in counties but where I live, cities and Counties are separate

This was a good quiz but I feel like it should be yellow-boxed, otherwise it's "largest cities in the U.S." in disguise.
