Never heard of that use for G. Is that an American thing?

Short for grand which is used also in UK, but the short firm seems to be mostly US.

Yeah, I missed that one too. I ran out of time, but definitely more an American thing. Never heard it used in Britain.

German Metro rail can either be U-bahn (underground) or S-Bahn (above ground)
+3
Level 78
Jun 28, 2020
The S-Bahn is not a metro, it is a suburban network. Only the U-Bahn is a rapid transport network.
+2
Level 56

No, the S-Bahn at least in Berlin goes right through the city centre in three different routes. It is suburban as well, but so is the U-Bahn. The Wikipedia page begins "The Berlin S-Bahn is a rapid transit railway system..."

But my understanding of "Metro" is specifically an underground railway.

16 German cities have an S-bahn network, but only 4 (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Nuremberg) have a U-bahn system.

MPAA rating for films suitable for ages 17 and up is X.

R is if there is a parent with you.

+1
Level 73
Jul 8, 2020
X no longer exists under the MPAA ratings.

Rated R: Restricted – Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.

Rated NC-17: Adults Only – No one 17 and under admitted.

"X" hasn't been used as an MPAA rating for more than 30 years. It wasn't copyrighted, so anyone could use it and it became heavily associated with pornographic movies, so in 1990 the MPAA replaced it with the copyrighted NC-17 rating.

It never clicked what the 9/5 C + 32 question was about. I guess I've never needed to know before because we don't use F in Australia. Though it would have been much easier if you'd used the correct unit for Celsius (°C). Without the degree sign, C is coulombs.
+4
Level 76
Jul 24, 2022
good point, the degree sign would really help
+2
Level 71

It's not that typical to write the formula that way, though. C in the formula isn't really the unit abbreviation for Celsius, it's a variable in an equation (representing "the temperature in degrees Celsius), so it's common to see it F = 9/5C + 32. The degree symbol doesn't really belong. It's probably best to write it TF = 9/5 TC + 32 or something like that, and you certainly could write it as T′ °F = 9/5 T °C + 32 °C but that's less typical.

It's not a conversion from °C to °F, though, because that's °F = 9/5 °C. One degree celsius is nine-fifths of a degree Fahrenheit, period.

Personally, I think this question is truly U.S.-centric, but I also don't think that's a problem on a trivia quiz (it's okay to occasionally have to know something about the U.S. in trivia).

Took me a second too. East/West vs South/North. I was guessing relative position in the alphabet and on the keyboard.
+3
Level 21
Jul 11, 2020
Yeah, I struggled with that one too. I assumed it was the position in the alphabet (so what comes 18 letters after S) and ended up trying every letter in the alphabet before getting to N

It's kind of a silly one when a just as reasonable answer would be D, since E and W are next to eachother on the keyboard. There's no clear answer like with all the others.

Maybe I am just being nitpicky, but two of these answers should be displayed with the lower case letter, given the context of the clue. The musical term, and the number approx equal to 2.718 should always be indicated with the lower case letter, so the answer looks strange when it comes up with the capital letter.

Why was my comment deleted? All I said was I ran a bit short on time and than I usually see and hear "k" being used for 1000,-. But so did others and all their comments are still up. I didn't say anything weird or rude.

Or maybe you did delete all the comments about K/G and these are all new ones. (though I don't think the june 26 are new). Still wouldn't see why you'd do that.

This quiz inspired me to create two A-Z quizzes where each answer is comprised of one letter and one number, such as:

Audi's 4-door luxury sedan = A8

At first the quizzes were pretty tough, but I expanded the hints and hopefully they're easier now. I'd appreciate it if you'd check them out:

$1000 could easily be K. I've a grand referred to as a 'K' before even in speech but never as 'G'. If anything 4G or 5G I would never assume they're talking about money.
