What's the deal with Ukraine? I remember seeing them on the "poorest countries per capita" quiz earlier today and now apparently they're bleeding refugees? I always thought they were a semi-prosperous eastern European country, similar to the Baltic states, Russia or Romania. Apparently this isn't the case

They are fighting a civil war against Russian backed insurgents.

Wow I didn't realize it was this serious; news stories usually mention it in passing, so I figured it was more of a civil unrest or very minor conflict.

Almost 1.5 million internally displaced and nearly 1 million fled the country though...

It's a low intensity war in one part of the country (though still war), and most of the country is peaceful and perfectly fine to visit / live, apart from economic troubles brought about by the war and reduced trade with Russia. That's why it's not such a big everday news like Syria, Iraq, Yemen, or e.g. Bosnia in the past.

By "others" do you mean the Russians sent to Ukraine by Stalin after he wiped out many of the native Ukrainians (some estimates up to 12 million) by starvation in 1932 and 33? That Uncle Joe was such a nice guy and such a great ally in WWII. Just goes to show how much you are willing to overlook when the outcome will be better for you if you just ignore a few little things.

Ukrainians were not the only ones starved in 1932. Many Russians and Kazakhs also died because of Holodomor. And, of course, 12 million is too much.

I think Ukraine is in last place, or, second-to-last, next to Moldova. People are looking for any excuse to leave, probably.

Not to mention, they, apparently, can't legally draft their citizens to fight the war. The war defending their own sovereignty & territorial integrity. I don't know who lacked forethought when creating that rule. Apparently they're an intelligent populace. Quick way to selectively kill off your country's most valuable males- by only allowing the ones who will voluntarily die for it to do so.

Look it up for yourself. Yes, they can/do ask military-aged males to fight. No, AFAIK, there are no serious repercussions to refusniks. Good motivation to travel abroad.

half truth. If you look the main recieving country is russia. It's more that the Ukrainian government at the time was incredibly racist towards russians, outright forbidding their language and oppressing them, which caused the regions in the donbass to declare independence in the first place. The russian speaking citizens were mainly the ones that were fleeing the country. Of course now since the invasion this has changed massively and the ukrainian government is no longer the main bad guy in this situation, but the russian one is.

well they are not allowed in to Saudi Arabia. Not sure what Oman's position is but given the terrain and climate it's not really easy to get to Oman. I was wondering why Libya missed the cut.

It struck me that Colombia is on this list... A more recent list would include Venezuela for sure, as 600,000 Venezuelans have fled to Colombia and many more have fled to other neighboring countries. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/nation-world/world/americas/venezuela/article204753119.html

What are the time parameters for the answers? Refugees only for the year 2014? A few years leading up to 2014? All through history up to 2014? I assume not this latter one, but perhaps a change of wording in the description would help narrow it down?

@ander217 and @tylerdavid: You are misinterpreting the source data. The source data shows, for each year, the number of refugees that had registered in all prior years and had not yet returned to their home country. I added a caveat to make this more clear.

I was interested in this too. The cutoff point is around the 1950s or 60s I'm guessing, since refugees from the Vietnam war would appear to be included, but not those from Europe during WW2, or from Korea.

If it were counted as it's own country, then yes it would be. However, something should represent these refugees, as just its refugees in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon alone would be in the top 3.
+6
Level 48
Sep 28, 2020
Palestinians are not part of the overall UN definitions of refugees, they have special rules for themselves. They have their own special UN agency (UNRWA), and unlike any other UN-recognised refugees, their position is transferred to following generations. In short, according to the UN, there are refugees and there are Palestinian refugees.

It's strange isn't it - the idea of classing anyone as a refugee if their (great) grandfather was a refugee. That logic would make me a refugee, as my grandmother fled Czechoslovakia in 1938.

Just off the top of my head the Central African Republic and Nigeria have problems with violence resulting in refugees which decidedly come under the "Muslim" category (Boko Haram and the Séléka).

Admittedly they are not "Muslim countries" though, although Nigeria is probably majority-Muslim, just.

+3
Level 56

The Central African Republic does have a fair amount of Islamic extremism especially up north but most of the violence there isn't because of them. It's simply because it's a very unstable country with many competing groups trying to gain power and resources. The violence caused by Islamic groups there is just one of many reasons the Central African Republic would make this list.
