Early on I just started using any words that rhymed with "gates". That filled in a BUNCH of letters. Sort of took the pressure off to then go back letter-by-letter. Great quiz.

Yep! First time I played it myself I had lots of "ain" or "ane" (brain, crane, drain) and then suddenly blanked on E :)

It's funny how the brain works sometimes with coming up with words!

Mine was -out (about, bouts, court, doubt...) I blanked on 'j' though but I ran out of time anyway.

Not strictly "-out", but you could have had "joust" which is close :)

Hey, I used the word "gates" too! I found it way easy just typing in four letter words with an -s on the end!

Maybe play again but try challenging yourself to complete it without using a plural! :)

I only thought of that near the end, so only 2 words benefitted from it. I believe it was night that inspired tight and wight. If I had thought of that at the start I could have been a lot faster. Still more than happy with 1:18 as a non-native speaker.

Thanks! And yes, I figured time needs to play a factor here, since given enough time almost everybody would get 100%, so had to make it a challenge!

The current stats suggest the time is about right though.

I got most of them with only a little panic, but how was it that the only N-word I could think of (after about 30 seconds panicking) was "nexus"?! I don't even know what it means, but thank goodness it was accepted! Very stressful quiz - 5 stars

Is it possible to complete this using only words ending in 'S' (indeed, only plural nouns or 3rd person singular verbs), by the way? I tried it on my second go through and only missed 'Q' and I think one other that I can't remember - but I thought of a 'Q' one afterwards.

edit: 'X' seems to be the sticking point?

Great! There is one X that works: Xyst (something greek or roman from the looks of Google). And thankfully the plural Xysts is allowed!

I got 25/26, and almost all of them were just four letter words with an S added to the end. Cool quiz, but I think a version of this with no plurals would make things a lot more challenging (allow more time?).
+5
Level 68

I could make variations (there could be a lot), but I think it's more interesting / easier for users to impose those restrictions on themselves and to replay the quiz :)

The only variation I was considering making would be removing any word in the 10,000 most common words or something like that.

There are Wordle knock-offs that suffer similar pains to wrangle s-ending plurals. It's a surprising amount of work curating a word bank. Interestingly, Wordle allows for 10,000+ words that can be guessed (many of them plurals), but there are only ~2000 words that work as answers.

Even though this quiz isn't trying to be Wordle or even a knockoff of it (despite the quiz's photo on the featured page), maybe those word lists can help you out down the line.

The problem with using another source like Wordle is that it's harder to be succinct about what constitutes a word. Scrabble is kind of the "standard" for that, even if it includes some weird words.

I got all, but interestingly, those were the only two I used plurals for ( I thought I only used one, but I just went throught the alphabet and I used kerbs and zeals).

Also interesting, though perhaps just mildy so. I have none of the top 3 words, apart from two that are number one! (d and x). For some the first word that came to mind were really unusual ones. But hey, whatever comes fastest

I did it in 1:19 on my first time and english is not my language. So not wayyy too little time. But if you get stuck on one I imagine it might be too little for some (without the way). You just don't need to stop and think, if you don't immediately know a word go to the next. think of the next word while you are typing the previous one.
