How did this quiz get featured?

My guess is that QM saw it, liked it, and decided to give it a feature.

Most likely, but I wonder then why other quizzes with 5 star ratings from QM aren't featured, but this is? Not saying this is a bad quiz by any means!

Houston?

Level 74

I don't think Houston's city limits technically touch the gulf.

Actually, I just looked on Google Maps, and you could argue that it does.

It seriously looks like it's like 5 meters away, it's crazy close but I don't think it touches

I'd argue against Houston. It is on the Buffalo Bayou(which is a river), which empties into the San Jacinto River and then empties into Galveston Bay, meaning it isn't directly on the Ocean.

I did really poorly on the East Coast, places I expected to have high populations, like Atlantic City, kept getting in my way. Also, I hate New Jersey again.

I would argue for the inclusion of Houston. The City Limits include areas like Johnson Space Center on Clear Lake (Bay), and the area around the San Jacinto Battleground on Crystal Bay. Both of those would seem to be included in the caveat "any of the numerous bays, gulfs and inlets"

League City also touches Clear Lake and Pasadena definitely touches Galveston Bay.
+1
Level 47

Clear Lake is a Lake, not part of the ocean, but I might add Pasadena

if Palm Bay is included, Houston should definitely be. Palm Bay doesnt directly touch the ocean, but it borders the Indian Ocean, which is directly connected to the Atlantic

New Orleans?? Possibly Houston too?
+3
Level 62
Jul 13, 2021
Yeah, I don't understand either of those exclusions. Looking at a map, an exclave of Houston is on what they're calling a bay, which seems pretty oceanic to me. Then New Orleans is wide open to the ocean on one side, but they call it a lake. Apparently, it used to be separated from the ocean by some land, but that has since eroded.

Lake Borgne's Wikipedia page says that it is a lagoon of the Gulf of Mexico. New Orleans should be here.

There's a couple on here which, looking at Google Maps, look out of order. eg. Pompano Beach and Ft. Lauderdale.
+1
Level 60
Jul 15, 2021
Exactly ! Pomapano Beach is north of Ft Lauderdale and also there's no way you can turn a map to make San Jose be between San Francisco and Oakland

How are the cities here sorted..? Doesn't look like it's according to size nor alphabetical order or anything, and it looks very untidy and unpleasing... also Houston and New Orleans (like everyone else asked)?

Fun quiz. You got me with Honolulu. I think New Orleans should be included.

Wikipedia (9th Ward of New Orleans): "St. Bernard Parish is the boundary to the southeast, Lake Borgne farther southeast and east, and the end of Orleans Parish to the east at the Rigolets."

Wikipedia (Lake Borgne): "Although early maps show it as a lake surrounded by land, coastal erosion has made it an arm of the Gulf of Mexico."

Ummm...San Juan, Puerto Rico is a city of 300K that is part of the United States and touches the Gulf of Mexico/Atlantic. Seems like a glaring oversight since there is no mention of a constraint to cities being in one of the 50 States.

San Jose is an amoeba that surrounds Santa Clara and a few other places and there is this random part called North San Jose -east and a bit north of Levi Stadium that does touch SF Bay mudflats at the far south end of the bay

If you start in Boston going south to FL back north and west across the Gulf of Mexico then continue west to the Pacific the move from south to north along the California coast

Chula Vista that shares a border with Mexico comes before San Diego
