Well, I'm not sure it can be called "nearby" when it's 1680 km away. Moreover, the UN recognises it as a part of Mauritius, so technically the one who seeks to "gain control" is Maldives

When the Dutch held Mauritius, their country was mostly known in English as the Dutch republic or the United provinces. It only became the Netherlands as of 1815.

The country (and island) is named after the then ruler (Stadhouder), Maurits (Maurice). (and the French named Port Louis after louis XV).

For some historical perspective, the start of the Wiki article on Stadtholders (literal translated, the Dutch word stadhouder(s) means city holder(s).

In the Low Countries, stadtholder was an office of steward, designated a medieval official and then a national leader. The stadtholder was the replacement of the duke or earl of a province during the Burgundian and Habsburg period (1384 – 1581/1795).

The title was used for the official tasked with maintaining peace and provincial order in the early Dutch Republic and, at times, became de facto head of state of the Dutch Republic during the 16th to 18th centuries, which was an effectively hereditary role.

For the last half century of its existence, it became an officially hereditary role under Prince William IV of Orange. His son, Prince William V of Orange, was the last stadtholder of the republic, whose own son, King William I of the Netherlands, became the first king of the Netherlands.

Hinduism and rupee? How does India figure into this? You don't really hear of them as seafaring colonizers.

The britishers brought bonded slaves from India to Mauritius. Sigh.

Yeah, the Indian influence makes sense to me given that they were colonized by the British. What perplexes me more is that they speak a French Creole language. If they were originally colonized by the Dutch then taken by the British, why do they speak French instead of English or Dutch?

Mauritius was colonized by the Dutch, then the French and then the British. The British kept most of the slaves and workers from the French colony, so they still used their version of French to communicate, which later was known as Mauritian Creole.

After slavery was abolished in the empire, they got the next best thing cheap Indian labor. Indians were sent all over the empire. There are lots of large Indian settlements in lots of unexpected places like Trinidad, Cape Town, Fiji etc. Probably the best known athlete of Indian heritage in non cricketing countries is Fijian golfer Vijay Singh.

Interestingly (though not relevant to Mauritius) India did spread its cultural influence (including Hinduism, Sanskrit as a prestige language and an Indian ruling class) throughout South-East Asia and across Indonesia. This was later displaced or overlaid by Islamic and European cultural influence, but you will still find royalty with Sanskrit names, counting numbers that are recognisably Indo-European, and of course Bali as a remaining outpost of Hinduism.

Well, today I learned that I can make my way to the country badge by actually knowing things about countries OR I could know absolutely nothing about a country and just magically get enough answers correct by randomly guessing.
