Topological Map of the USA Quiz

A topological map is a type of diagram that has been simplified so that only vital information, such as borders, remains and unnecessary detail, such as size and shape, has been removed. Fill in this map of the contiguous United States by correctly guessing each highlighted state.
Michigan is represented as a single polygon, to avoid confusion.
Lake Michigan is included as the shaded rectangle.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I used a program called Inkscape to make the map and then uploaded it to JetPunk. There are a number of helpful posts describing the process of making an SVG map if you look them up. Also, if you liked this quiz, make sure to check out my World version of the quiz.

Needs a lot more time, maybe five more minutes. I ran out of time with three left unguessed, and i started randomly guessing when i had 16 left and there were two minutes left.

What practical use do these maps serve? Other than fun quizzes, why would someone use such a map?

Metro maps (and also other transport maps) are usually topological as it doesn't matter where exactly the line goes, only how to get from one station to another and in which payment zone they are.

A theoretical example: say weed is legal in some states and not the others and you try to find out how to transport it overland. It's so valuable and risky to lose it that a long detour doesn't matter, only where you're allowed to go.

Wow this quiz was hard in the best way, a quiz where the huge midwest states are harder to identify than the east coast states, that's and accomplishment. Nice to see how this Dutchman with no US experience can still take a long time in a US geoquiz. Love it!

Interesting that Michigan does not border Illinois or Minnesota on this map, but Tanzania does border DR Congo on the world topological map. I don't know which way is more correct but interesting that one accepts borders through lakes and the other doesn't.

I did this quiz like 4 or 5 times before I finally got the middle section right - I can't seem to decide where Iowa is, and even on a regular map can't keep Kansas and Nebraska straight. Really great quiz, well made.

It would be really helpful if scrolling over one you've already turned green told you what it is. I got a bit lost in the middle because I couldn't remember what I had already gotten right
