The user results actually surprised me. Domain was the first rank I thought of, while family and genus completely slipped my mind.

I'm surprised they surprised you. Most people don't delve deeper into the taxonomy than what they are taught in school, and up until maybe the last half decade most classes excluded Domain since it's a relatively new term.

I'd never heard of domain either. When I was in school, it started with Kingdom, and we remembered it with a cheeky mnemonic "Kind People Can Often Find Good S*x."

That's so much more fun than ours was (that sci instructor went with the typical King Philip). But the next teachers mnemonic for the planets? "My Very Er*tic Mate Joyfully Satisfies Unusual Needs Promptly", oh my!

100%. Hurray for 8th grade biology. Although I don't remember much from the 10-12 grades because of the recreational plants that were popular in the 70's.

For microbiologists and geneticists we generally don't use the Linnaean system.

The phylogenetic domains of life are classified by ribosomal RNA, and while some do align with the Linnaean system, it's generally thought of as antiquated and outdated.

Just FYI.

+3
Level 79
Dec 3, 2019
No - a clade is a group of organisms of different species that (most likely) evolved from a common ancestor. A cladogram is a diagram that depicts the most probable sequence of divergence of these species from the common ancestor.

Isn't that system kinda old and not very used nowadays ? I personnally never learned any of that stuff in school and from a Darwinian perspective it doesn't make much sense to define arbitrary boxes to sort out organisms.

The only ones that make some sor of sense would be domains and species and I believe there is still controversy about dividing life into only 3 separate branches (that don't include viruses or simpler "lifeforms"). Even species is a vague terminology that can't really represent the "continuity" of reality.

My point is I wouldn't include that in a scientist badge.

I'm showing my age. I'm 46. When I was in grade school (mostly 1980s), "Domain" was not taught, because it wasn't even scientifically devised until 1990. I've heard of it before, but only fleetingly, and not committed to memory. I am looking it up right now and trying to understand it.
