Check the facts! Finland was never invaded by Germany (or anybody else) and was not part of Axis. Well, we did collaborate with Germany for a few months but neither I - nor anybody else who knows anything about history - would call that "being part of axis."
Yeah, the Danish National Museum describes Denmark as being an "occupied country controlled by Nazi Germany". That seems like a weird thing to say if only 2% was occupied.
I was thinking that as well, but Quizgas must be right the country of Denmark only consists of 2% of the total land mass of the entire Danish territory which includes Greenland and Faroe Isles (and maybe also Iceland in 1940)
I'm pretty sure that Laos was 100%. It would make sense, as all the others around it were and along with Cambodia and Vietnam it was French Indochina, which Vichy France basically gave to the Japanese, so I think you could probably put it as 100%.
Should Argentina be added? I know they supported the Axis and a mass of Nazis fled there after the war. They did some supplying/shipping stuff in both wars for the Germans, but unsure about actual "occupation"...
^ Argentina was a Nazi puppet. As you said, many Nazis fled there after the war. Some remained, while others transitted to Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil. They saw Argentina as a haven, so why would they invade it? It would have been counterintuitive.
Austria is not listed as an Axis member primarily because, I suppose, it was annexed by Germany in the Anschluss, and thus did not join the Axis cause entirely of its own will, unlike other countries which installed their own separate pro-fascist governments. Keep in mind that Austria was considered to be a part of Germany's sovereign territory, and not a separate sovereign nation, after the Anschluss occurred.
I am of the opinion that even though Algeria and Morocco were never technically occupied they were in all practical purposes puppet states of the Axis. I've done a cursory search and haven't found anything, but can anyone explain how/why Burma was completely occupied but none of modern day Bangladesh was? Seems strange that Japan decided to just stop at the modern day border and decide they weren't going any further since both Burma and India were both part of the British empire.
The Japanese certainly tried to go further - into what's now India rather than Bangladesh. They suffered one of their biggest defeats on land of the entire war, at Imphal/Kohima. This should probably be added to the narrative as they temporarily occupied a bit more than Andaman/Nicobar as a result.
There was a 1986 border adjustment that gave Liechtenstein a few sq. ft. of Austrian land, thus it should be included (however trivial) as well as a small corner of the St. Gallen area in Switzerland. Same with Malta, a small island (I forget which) was occupied briefly by the Italians.
I fiinally guessed them all with 2:12 remaining at 4:06:42 PM on February 13, 2019. I tried this one about half a dozen times before and each time I would recall all but one or two, and so was forced to stop short each time. However, sorting through all of them in my mind, I systematically and semi-randomly went through them all as before-and succeeded. East Timor was the final country I entered to complete the quiz. This quiz is also significant because upon completion, my point total increased by 5, to 801, which increased my level from Level 29 to Level 30! I feel as though I am moving up in the ranks.
This is one of the crudest misconceptions I have ever seen on this site. Finland was never occupied by the Axis and that 100% makes this quiz utterly ridiculous. Finland was unfortunately a co-belligerent by its own terms, teaming with Germany against the Soviet threat just for survival and payback. Finland only gave the Germans the right to advance through Finnish Lapland which certainly doesn't count as "occupation". When Finland was eventually forced to make a separate peace agreement with the Soviet Union, it was also forced to start the Lapland War. So there was a small sorry group of Germans suddenly having to scramble away hastily from Lapland, but that doesn't even count for 1%. From an ally to an enemy but never occupied!
The Hitler and Mannerheim recording is also a fascinating piece of history. It is the only surviving recording of Adolf Hitler speaking in an unofficial tone. The recording is from Hitlers visit to honor the birthday of the Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Defence Forces, Carl Gustav Mannerheim. I doubt Hitler would've done such an honor for an occupied country.
The quiz clearly says co-belligerents in purple. Just because they fought on the same side as the Germans for awhile doesn't make them bad guys. Conversely, the Soviet Union weren't good guys even though they fought for the Allies.
You should've included Algeria, Morocco and Egypt. I'm pretty sure Algeria and Morocco was occupied by axis powers (US retook by operation torch) and I'm also sure there was a time when Italy marched into Egypt (battle of El Alamein). Also, I think some more French African colonies in Sub-saharan Africa submitted to Vichy French forces and I think that should be counted as 'occupied by axis'
It says so in the description (calls it purple not pink). Though I had never (consciously atleast) heard of the word, and didnt know what it meant. Though I didnt have time to think about that anyway, didnt look at any of the %
I would argue that Finland isn't part of the Axis powers. According to Reddit, Finland didn't want to cooperate with Germany unless they needed to. You can check this article here: reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/242i6s/was_finland_a_part_of_the_axis_in_wwii/
Vichy France should definitely be considered a co-belligerent of the Axis. They fought against the Allies in the Near East, Senegal and Madagascar. They also repeatedly bombed Gibraltar.
Technically, Djibouti was partially occupied as well, around 25% in July 1940. Source: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_invasion_of_French_Somaliland#:~:text=Somalia%20%26%20Ethiopia).-,The%201940%20invasion,%22%20(now%20called%20Djibouti
How come Denmark is marked as having only two percent of its territory occupied? The entire country was occupied. Maybe you're counting Greenland but Greenland isn't part of Denmark proper and wasn't at the time.
FINLAND is the only country who has EVER stopped the Red Russian War Machine. Ohhhh yes, we rule! ;)
Finland fought alongside Germany for years, not months.
(whistling)
"Doo do doo. Don't notice us. Nothing to see here. "
(+ Montenegro and Singapore)
AND MISSED INDONESIA AND FRANCE
I also forgot Indonesia but somehow remembered all countries attached to it (Brunei Timor etc)
Wasn't the Vatican occupied. Then I remembered they were established as independent again before WW2
