What is a unique letter?
+37
Level 56
Jan 29, 2021
Presumably a letter which no other official language begins with. I must say I'm wondering what other language makes Xhosa a wrong answer...

Level 34

what do you mean?

Level 84
May 23, 2021
Xhosa is official in South Africa and Zimbabwe, so it fails "is official in only one country".
+2
Level 59
May 25, 2022
don't think Xhosa has more than 7 million speakers

Xhosa has 11 million speakers and is only official in South Africa

according to Wikipedia It's official in S.A. and Zimbabwe. I tried Xhosa first as well.

Level 78
Apr 20, 2022
I disagree. It's clue that only works if you have already identified the finalists resulting from the previous questions. It's not something unique that can be assessed independently as the rest.
+7
Level 79

I agree this clue is very vague and unspecific
+4
Level 80
May 22, 2022
I think it’s fine. You just have to read the clue as it is and think about what might be considered a unique letter. It’s pretty straightforward and there are only 3 languages that fit the clue alone: Zulu, Xhosa, and Quechua.

I tried Bahasa Malaysia, thinking it would work for Brunei, Singapore or Indonesia. But I guess that designation is specific to Malaysia?

Cool quiz - nominated. Tried Quechua as the unique-lettered language, but discovered afterwards it's official in more than one country - Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia at least.

As an FYI Persian in Tajikistan (Tajik) uses the Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet and not the Arabic one

Was disappointed that Farsi didn't count for Persian, but happy to spend some time learning how it is different
+1
Level 70
May 21, 2022
I wondered the same thing.

Apparently Farsi is Persian spoken in Iran while Dari and Tajiki is Persian spoken in Afghanistan and Tajikistan respectively. They're mutually intelligible but not exactly the same.

It reminds me a bit of Holland vs Netherlands --- it's okay to use the term Holland if you're very specifically talking about Holland, but despite Holland being in the Netherlands, the two words aren't synonymous.

+4
Level 65
May 21, 2022
That's close, but Farsi is just the native name for Persian, which ended up becoming used in English as well though it's not the English name. The Persian dialect of Iran is called Western Persian or just Persian as the others are seen as dialects.

Doesn't Bulgarian work for the blue one? Official only in Bulgaria. Official in EU because official in Bulgaria. A shade over 10 million speakers (only 7 million native but the question doesn't say native speakers) and uses the Cyrillic alphabet.

Not a unique letter, but for the first 4 categories it should be accepted.

Can that question be changed to “only language to start with that letter” or something similar? I interpreted the “unique letter” as starting with a letter that doesn’t appear elsewhere in the word.

Greek is official in 2 countries! Cyprus exists, it's in the EU and uses Greek!

And I get that for you Cyprus isn't in Europe (wrongly), but with the reference to EU before, it's absolutely misleading to imply it's not an European country.
