Unpleasant sounding historical coast gets me every time, I start thinking about slave coast and things like that.

ok most people including me do not like mosquitos, but not the word I think of when I hear unpleasant in historical context.

Before anti-malarials, I think that the Mosquito Coast would be very unpleasant of a name since you knew the chance of contracting malaria was decently high and the chance of death from that would be pretty high as well.

Aren't the Sandinistas in power right now? Why does it say until 1990?

You are right, they were in power until 1990 and again since 2007.

The FSLN was never radical, they had no intention to abolish private property. The wording of this sort of implies they were somehow more dangerous than the contra terrorists.

Single party rule and oppression that comes with it is the radical part I guess

There's nothing radical about single-party rule or oppression. The reference above to property relations is far closer to the mark.

The wording of the Contras question is also problematic. It wasn't 'certain elements of the U.S.', it was the U.S. government who funded the terrorists.

To me, radical just means "far left," like on a scale of radical to reactionary. I personally don't have any bad connotations with that word.

Oldest European city in mainland America, named for a city in southern Spain.

1. Should specify the oldest continuously inhabited. The oldest is actually L'Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland

2. I do not believe it is the oldest continuously inhabited in the Americas, as Veracruz, Mexico and a city in Venezuela are older

L'Anse aux Meadows was certainly not a city. About the rest Wikipedia says that "Unlike other cities that claim the same distinction, the city of Granada was not only the settlement of the conquest, but also a city registered in official records of the Crown of Aragon, and the Kingdom of Castile in Spain."

I don't even know who Daniel Ortega is, but when I saw "Daniel ____," I thought "Ortega!" without a moment's hesitation. I must have read his name in passing somewhere and it just stuck. The brain is weird sometimes.

Genuinely I felt exactly the same. As soon as I saw Daniel I thought Ortega. I wasn't confident though because I didn't think I had heard of the president of Nicaragua enough to know it so easily.

I should have learned by now after taking so many of these country quizzes to always type in the name of the country. There's a good probability it will show up as a river, lake, mountain, currency, etc. I missed the name of the lake on this one.

Name for the rebel groups...can the singular be an acceptable type in, or does it have to have the “s” on the end?

Definitely one of the hardest country quizzes.

19/20 My favorite Central American country!! Only missed the river.

The Rio San Juan in the southern part of the country is much more well known as it's a big fishing destination..

Never heard of the Rio Coco
