I think that has more to do with more people guessing the river question right. Both statements sound outrageous enough that "they must be true". Unfortunately, only one of them is.

But radio DJ Alan Freed used the term "rock and roll" to promote the concert and many of the acts influenced subsequent artists who played more recognizable rock and roll music.
