Big thanks to everyone who pointed out clues that were confusing, misleading, or downright wrong! This quiz is better because of you.

If you like this quiz, check out the sequel, which is the same concept but with entirely different clues.

North Macedonia also have multiple words in its common name, not just Czech Republic (which is also questionable since the name Czechia is now more used on JetPunk)
+2
Level 86
Dec 14, 2020
Fair points on both counts; I didn't think when I recently updated Macedonia to North Macedonia that it would invalidate an earlier clue. I'll try to get around to fixing this at some point, but at first glance it doesn't look like there are any easy fixes.

You should clarify that these two words use the American spelling. It's spelled "mould" elsewhere.

I found it a really confusing clue. Why is it "non-proper" English?
+3
Level 86
Jun 10, 2021
"Proper" here refers to proper noun. Looking back at the clue, I suppose it could be a little confusing. I can try to reword it.

Didn't Latvia, as Courland, own Tobago as a colony?
+2
Level 86
May 11, 2021
Yes, and (I now see) they had a few islands in the Gambia River as well. They don't appear to have controlled any of these places for more than 15 years or so. That doesn't exactly scream "colonial empire" to me.

If more people comment, I'll consider changing it, but I think it's fine as is for now.

+1
Level 58

You could argue that Courland was subbortinated to Poland, so it was Polish empire ;)

I'm not sure if I get this quiz... Ireland doesn't fit to being an island country, share an inhabited island with another country or end in "land"... and It was not already guessed.
+3
Level 86
Jun 10, 2021
Ireland is the answer to "To have more than 2 Nobel Laureates in literature", so it should not be considered for any of the other three clues that you mention, which all come after that one.
+1
Level 62
Oct 2, 2021
Yeah, I think the quiz is confusing. It wouldn't accept Bosnia for the country with no red on the flag, and other things like that. If I've understood it right, it shouldn't say the word "already" in the instructions - that line could be re-written, and it's not the case that, for instance, Estonia is the "only country which" has no red in its flag - that heading is a problem too.

I think counting Latvia as having a colonial empire would be interesting for the purposes of this quiz, sure it wasn't long-standing but it's not technically wrong, besides, it will make for an interesting fact for all the confused people who come to this comment section and learn about Courland.

I'm not sure whether Andorra should technically qualify as a monarchy, since "mon-" implies only one ruler, while Andorra is a co-principality, ruled by two people.
+1
Level 86
Oct 11, 2021
+4
Level 78
Oct 18, 2021
I think wikipedia is wrong here. In fact, in their own article about monarchy they define it as "a form of government in which a person, the monarch, is head of state for life or until abdication." This isn't the case for neither of Andorra's co-princes (one is elected democratically every four years, the other can be replaced at any time by the Pope).

And of course, if we decided that the co-princes are "monarchs", then we should talk about a diarchy.

According to this article:

https://balkaninsight.com/2020/01/28/moldova-hits-new-records-in-wine-exports/

"Moldova exported 156,674 million litres of wine in 2019, with 12,607 million litres more compared to 2018."

Whatever the actual number is, it's certainly higher than the 600,000 liters asked in the Portugal question

+1
Level 86
Oct 29, 2021
Hmm. My source for this was https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/wine-producing-countries, which, now that I look closer, is a little inconsistent about its numbers, years, and units of measurement. I trust Wikipedia more, but its numbers are from 2014.

I think at that point in the quiz Portugal probably is still the biggest wine producer left, but I'm not sure I can confirm it, and I don't know a good cutoff number to use. Which means I will probably be looking for the fourth different clue to use for that one. Sigh . . .
