Doesn't New Zealand border up to three oceans?
+2

Mar 13, 2020
Please explain.
+19
Level 84
Mar 13, 2020
You might think that it borders the Pacific, Indian and Antarctic Oceans... not event two of those.

The Antarctic Ocean northernmost point is 60º S... New Zealand isn't that south: Jacquemart Island is 52º37'10''. And remember, no claim in Antarctica is "valid".

The Indian Ocean ends west of Tasmania, so it doesn't touch New Zealand.

The Pacific Ocean not only touches New Zealand: It surrounds it completely.

No, the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean at Cape Leeuwin in Western Australia.

The Southern Ocean reaches the southern end of New Zealand, and so New Zealand touches two oceans.

+6
Level 77
Mar 14, 2020
To the north Iceland borders the Greenland Sea. By some definitions the Greenland Sea is a part of the Atlantic Ocean, and by other it is a part of the Arctic Ocean. So no one can be sure about that.
+4
Level 72
Nov 1, 2022
The IHO says that Iceland does not touch the Arctic Ocean. I don't think I've ever seen any other source take that stance, unless it specifically cited the IHO (haven't done a ton of research into this, though). For instance, Britannica says Iceland touches the Arctic Ocean, as do the CIA factbook, World Atlas, Funk and Wagnall's, Wikipedia, etc., etc., etc. Seeing as how ocean boundaries are arbitrarily defined, I think you ought to either go with a general consensus or else give your definition as a caveat.

+3
Level 67
Apr 27, 2020
What my grammatically challenged compatriot was trying to convey is that Australia is an island. Though I understand this is not the crux of the issue - it is whether we should be treated as a country or a continent.

Just a quick reference on Wikipedia (yes, yes the font of all knowledge...) shows the difference between the continental Australia and the country of Australia is the inclusion of the island of New Guinea, which would also include PNG.

I note that PNG is an acceptable answer in this quiz and submit, therefore, so should Australia. We are definitely a sovereign country and would like to be included in such quizzes...

C'mon, mate - let us play too!

+1
Level 60
Apr 17, 2022
I'm not sure you understand the issue. Australia is unarguably a country, but on JetPunk it's not considered an island country. This is because the continent of Australia or Oceania has to have a continental landmass, and since the landmass Australia is the largest one in the continent, it is considered the continental landmass, just as with the Americas or Afro-Eurasia. Nowhere do we claim that Australia is not a country; it's just not an island country.

You're saying the difference between the country and continent of Australia is the island New Guinea... Where would New Zealand, Kiribati, F. S. Micronesia, etc fall under? The continent of Australia is so much more than just the country Australia and the island New Guinea.

+2

I don't see why it should be. For every continent, you have the main landmass and surrounding islands (eg. continental Europe and Britain, Iceland, Malta, etc.; continental Asia and Japan, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, etc. and so on) Why shoud Oceania be an exeption? Wouldn't it be more reasonable to consider Australia to be the main landmass of Oceania and the rest to be the adja ent islands?

Level 29
May 23, 2020
Agreed
+2
Level 60
Apr 17, 2022
Agreed, it's not a continent. But that's not the argument here.

Oceania has to have a continental landmass, just as North & South America have the Americas and Africa, Asia, and Europe have Afro-Eurasia. The landmass Australia's the largest one in Oceania, so it's logically the best candidate for the continental landmass. Since the country Australia comprises mostly of the landmass Australia, which is considered a continental landmass and therefore not an island, Australia is not an island country.

Please fix the caveats. It says that Australia is a continent, not an island, but it would be much more accurate to say that the landmass Australia considered to be the continental landmass of the continent Australia / Oceania.

This would prevent a lot of confusion, since the current caveat sounds like we're saying Australia isn't a country and whether the continent is Australia or Oceania is irrelevant anyways.

+1
Level 60
Nov 1, 2022
I've answered this above.

The Americas is surrounded by water, does that make it an island?

And yes, I think the caveat was worded in a confusing manner. Perhaps it should say that it's a continental landmass. The rough definition of an island to my belief is an landmass that is not a continental landmass.

The main landmass of Australia is the continental landmass for its continent, it's the only landmass that makes sense for the continent (Oceania / Australia). Therefore, it is not an island.

Hope this clears things up a bit.
