Don't know why you're joking about Ljubljana since it really is a top tourist destination, it's just very small.

300k residents, 700k tourists every year. Tourism is probably one of the major industries there.

Exactly. And, which cities are particularly famous for weird things that make for good Instagram pics. So, I was really surprised New Orleans didn't make the cut for that reason.

Curious as to why you think sharing happy experiences with friends makes one shallow? I enjoy seeing new places through the eyes of others, just as I enjoy reading your posts about the many places you've visited that I'll likely never see. If a place has lots of tourists, doesn't that mean there's usually a good reason? Some places that appeal to families with young children wouldn't appeal to a single man or a retired couple. Some people want busy places with exciting night life while others prefer relaxation or scenic natural wonders. It doesn't make them shallow if they post pics. Then again, I'm the one who was sending photos to family of all the national parks we toured last summer, so maybe I'm shallow and just don't realize it.

I just think anyone with an Instagram account who uses hashtags is probably shallow. Sending photos to family members is a little bit different. There are people (I've met several) who seem to live their lives for no other reason than to create pictures for Instagram. Just to show everyone (mostly large numbers of "followers" online that they don't even know) how awesome their life is. But it's a sham. Going anywhere with them is incredibly obnoxious. Dated a girl like this very briefly. We'd go to the pool. She would spend an hour getting ready making sure she looked good. Spend two hours next to the pool taking selfies so that everyone could see what a great time she was having at the pool. And then we'd leave, usually without actually using the pool. She was only there to take selfies for her social media followers. This is the sort of person I think of when I imagine people posting and tagging images on Instagram.

If you travel because it makes you happy and you have a great time somewhere and want to share that experience with people you actually know. Fine.

If you travel only because you want to show off and project a certain lifestyle and are concerned more with what strangers on the Internet think about you and how your social media profile appears than you are with actually experiencing the places you travel to... it's my opinion that this is pretty shallow.

Maybe you disagree. Or maybe I wasn't clear with my original post. Or maybe you just don't know many Instagram users.

The point of hashtags is so that strangers can find posts with a similar theme. If you're only sharing pictures with people you know there is no reason to use hashtags.

I'm so surprised so many people missed Vegas, I thought it was fairly obvious as a tourist destination. Not that I've ever been nor do I have interest in going :P

We spent a few hours in Vegas on our way from the Grand Canyon to Zion (after a stop at the Hoover Dam). My son is trying to catch a fish in every state and since this was our only time in Nevada, there we were tracking down a fishing location in downtown Vegas. Alas, he did not catch anything so a return visit to the state is necessary. Our family joke is that on the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors' Board list of "What brought you to Vegas?", fishing is probably not very high up on the list.
