The Pecheneg Khanates and Volga Bulgaria, both of which have very disputed borders.I excluded both in an older version of this quiz because of that. Unfortunately, it's very hard to find agreeable sources on the borders of these two

Some sources argue the Pechenegs went further east towards the Caspian Sea, some argue they went further west towards Hungary and Bulgaria and some argue they held more territories in the Caucasus region. It's very confusing.

actually, a century earlier England didn't exist and you'd have to count on Wessex, Mercia, east anglia etc.

Very interesting quiz! I got 47 and I swear I typed Franconia as well, but it wasn't accepted for some reason (it worked fine afterwards). Tbh I'm happy I got this many at all. The names of the vast majority of the ones I didn't get I read for the first time here.

The quiz is interesting, makes you rack your brain and teaches you something. If this doesn't make it nomination-worthy, I don't know what does. :) You've definitely got a nomination from me.

Great map. One thing though, I think you have Upper and Lower Lorraine switched. Lower Lorraine is the more northerly of the two, as it was "lower down the Rhine river system", per this article on Wikipedia.

Probably because it refers to Rostov Veliky (ancient), not Rostov-on-Don (founded in the 1700s).

Oh wow, such good criticism. Spending hours on end to make a proper map, just for some random internet dude bro to say it's "not original enough". You do a better job making a proper SVG map first, buddy.

Isn't there a piece of missing land along the coast of Belgium? No worries, I know how tricky it can be to make your own svgs, and yours are superb!
+3
Level 55
Feb 1, 2022
Thanks! Addressing this is pretty interesting, considering the coastal lines of the region of the Low Countries have changed quite a lot in a thousand years time. A lot of the land that is missing here was only reclaimed from the sea later on.

I think you can probably relax now.

I somehow doubt all these countries, feudal states, duchies, kingdoms, principalities, cantons, bishoprics, etc all harmoniously agreed on the official boundaries between their territories.

I had an ex who was loathe to replace a rotting, dilapidated fence she shared with a neighbor because she was afraid of an easement situation arising in the future. Just like Game of Thrones really but without the dragons and incestuousness.

Could you maybe accept "Lower Burgundy" or "Provence" for Arles too please? Because I learnt that kingdom as 'Burgundy' only, I had quite a difficulty remembering it... I'm sure Burgundy is another name for the place
+2
Level 55
Feb 12, 2022
Submitted this change for approval. This is confusing considering there were three different Burgundian states at the time. The Duchy of Burgundy within France, the County of Burgundy (Franche-Comté) and this specific kingdom.

You should also add, through suggestions and research, native names for the respective ''countries'' as possible answers. For example, ''Travunja'' is the Croatian spelling/version for ''Travunia'', ''Zahumlje'' is the same for ''Zachlumia'' and ''Srijem'' is for ''Syrmia''.
