Most of those small island countries were settled by Polynesians long before New Zealand was, because it's lots of short island hops to get to them, whereas you can't island-hop to New Zealand.

+7
Level 43
Jan 14, 2019
The Maori arrived in New Zealand around 1200AD from Eastern Polynesia. There is a myth that there were other people (the Mori Ori) in New Zealand before the Maori arrived, but that has been debunked.
+1
Level 77
Jul 10, 2023
The history of the Moriori is rough. A group of Māori leaves the main islands and goes to Chatham Island to follow a code of pacifism, eschewing the warring and cannibalism of the old islands. They become the Moriori, a distinct society from the Māori. Then a Māori tribe steals a European boat and sails over to Chatham to carry out a brutal genocide that lasted many years, wiping out most of the population who largely wouldn’t fight back because of their code. Moral of the story: non-violence is never the answer.

Wasn't Namibia a Dutch colony. Isn't that why dutch is spoken there?
+2
Level 60
Jul 24, 2021
Namibia was a German colony. Maybe they were once Dutch, or you are thinking about some parts of South Africa. But it doesn't matter, because the question asks for whom they gained independence, i.e. the last foreign country that owned them. And Namibia gained independece from South Africa.
+2
Level 64
Jul 24, 2021
German rule in Africa (as opposed to French, British and Portuguese rule) didn't involve much language teaching to the natives, and many native languages are spoken in Namibia, of which none is demographically dominant. That's why Afrikaans, not Dutch, which was introduced during decades of South African mandate rule in Namibia, has stuck around as the country's lingua franca.

Didn't Luxembourg gain independence from the Netherlands?
+2
Level 64
Jul 24, 2021
I think Luxembourg should be accepted as a country that gained its independence from the Netherlands. It was nominally separate from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands after 1815, but only to fulfil Prussia's demands that it be part of the German customs union, and in no way was it truly 'independent' until Belgian independence and the breakup of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.

"Capital of a country that starts with J", Jerusalem is not the capital of the apartheid 'state of Israël', Tel Aviv is, as recognised by the UN and most of the world.
+1
Level 89
Jul 10, 2023
First of all, Israel is not an "apartheid state." Second of all, the UN doesn't recognize Jerusalem as the capital because both Israel and Palestine claim it as theirs, but only Israel has actual control of it, and that's where their presidential residence, government offices, supreme court and parliament are located. Recognition does not always equal reality.
