Can you please accept Chou En-lai? They changed the romanization method from Wade-Giles to Pinyin right around then and both are equally right.

Maybe accept "airline" or "airlines" for the hijack question? You were pretty forgiving on many other lyrics. I was all set to type out "rock and roller cola wars" but just "cola" was sufficient. Also, I tried Pammunjon panmunjon pamunjon but no go.

why should syringe be accepted, that's not even close to the word in the lyrics. While syringe is another name for hypodermic needle, it is NOT a lyric in the song. Don't know why Quizmaster capitulated to this one. I don't recall singing the lyrics and going "Syringes on the shore". Mispellings I can understand. If it was a general quiz I would understand. But this is a lyric quiz and the lyrics should match the actual lyrics and not just synonyms.

Sally Ride wasn't the first female astronaut; she was the first American female astronaut. Valentina Tereshkova was the first. Maybe add the word "american" to that clue?
+3
Level 84
Aug 14, 2017
One can make an argument, saying that Ride was the first female astronaut, while Tereshkova was the first female cosmonaut...

But then again... many people no longer use the word cosmonaut.

+3
Level 48
Aug 18, 2017
If the purpose of these quizzes is to entertain and inform, the clue should be changed to first US female astronaut.

Valentina Tereshkova was the first astronaut/cosmonaut/woman in space. She's not in the song, of course, but let's get things right where we can.

Took me about 2 months to learn this song ahead of performing it a couple of years ago. Even after that, I'd get up to Lawrence of Arabia, British Beatlemania, and then have to make the majority up, with the odd one coming into my mind. But at least all that stuck 2 years later for this quiz!

Accept "Eastern Bloc" for "Communist Bloc"?
+2
Level 67
Jan 13, 2021
But that's not in the lyrics though. Wrong number of syllables
+2
Level 66
Jan 14, 2021
However, this quiz is meant for you to be able to take it if you don't know the lyrics, as implied in the description "GUESS all the historical events." Moreover, just "China" is accepted for "Red China" despite not actually being in the lyrics, so there is no reason to not accept "Eastern Bloc" for "Communist Bloc" which is the more common term.

Some of these clues also need to be more specific for this reason.

"Bubbly" blonde movie star?? I guess there isn't really any right or wrong word to use per se, but wouldn't "wholesome" would be far more accurate a word to use if you're looking to capture the image Doris Day earned over her career? Or am I thinking of someone else?
+1
Level 79
Jan 13, 2021
Agreed! When I think of bubbly blonde I think of Monroe, Mansfield, and Mamie Van Doren (thank you very much, Pulp Fiction). Doris Day was anything but a bubbly blonde movie star.

Jan 13, 2021
I'm not the only one who thinks so:

https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=doris+day+bubbly

And while Doris Day was wholesome, surely Donna Reed was the most wholesome blonde star of that era. All in all, "bubbly" seems to be good, and better than wholesome.

I love this song, but it's always bothered me a bit how Joel spent 4 verses on the period from 1949 to 1963 and only 1 verse on 1963 to 1989, even though the latter period is much longer and, in my opinion, more significant. It's made weirder by the fact that Billy Joel was born in 1949, so I doubt he even remembered much from the early '50s. Just some food for thought.
