you should also accept Antananarivo

Agreed! I thought about that one first as well

As the capital of Madagascar, Antananarivo is actually a capital on an island in the Indian ocean. Colombo does not 100% fits in that description, since Kotte is the actual capital of Sri Lanka.

also isn't Colombo no longer the capital of Sri Lanka?
+5
Level 71

Depends who you ask. Technically it's "Sri Ja.... Kotte" (not going to try to spell it), which is a suburb of Colombo. So the question should probably be reworded, but Colombo isn't 100% wrong.

Yes, this is a long-standing point of contention on JetPunk, but our Quizmaster has generally favored "Kotte" as the capital of Sri Lanka rather than Colombo.

wait, so just kotte works? you're saying i memorised sri jayawardenepura for no reason?

+1 to this!

(I mean: ok, I actually memorized Sri Jayawardenepura over on "that other site" a good number of years ago. But the point still stands. There are definitely some speed quizzes here where I could use the extra 5 seconds from not having to type it all out!)

Not to pile on, but given Kotte is the accepted Sri Lankan capital on other quizzes, and because Antananarivo also fits that clue, it should really be changed.

Got several by just guessing cities for other clues. Haven't had the same problem as much with the other "cities that end with" quizzes. This one would benefit from a yellow box though.

You should add Santiago, Chile as an answer since it is pretty major and I got it confused with the Quito question.

I guessed Santiago first, too. That being said, it does not quite fit the clue; according to Wikipedia "Most of the city lies between 500 m (1,640 ft) and 650 m (2,133 ft) above mean sea level."

Yeah, Santiago is actually in a valley, surrounded by the Andes on one side, but not on the Andes themselves.

I'm surprised it's called a "major" American city. It's not a backwater outpost, but it comes in ranking 54th in GDP by metro area. To me, that's more of a AAA team than one that's playing in the big league.

Okay Buffalo is NOT a major city. Wikipedia says its the 76th largest in the US and it's smaller population-wise than Doncaster, Catania, Karlsruhe, Strasbourg, Vigo, Halifax (Canada), and Itaquaquecetuba. You can find similar-sized cities in these countries with much more history.

Can you see why people bring up a US bias?

Buffalo is the second biggest city in New York, it's metro area is 1.2 million, and it has a lot of history, e.g. Mckinley assassination, Erie canal. More people have heard of Buffalo than Vigo.
