How are they going to list Texas as a "former country" and California as a "sub-national unit"? California was a republic for three days so if Texas is a former country, so is California... Really I think they should list Texas as a sub-national unit because that's what it is.

California was never an independent state:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Republic

The name "California Republic" appeared only on the flag the insurgents raised in Sonoma. It indicated their aspiration of forming a republican government for California. The insurgents elected military officers but no civil structure was ever established.

Nothing about this quiz seems to be random. It should be "Miscellaneous Flags". Random suggests that the questions are chosen at random. Confusing these words is a common mistake nowadays.

Agreed I thought this was a quiz where the flags would be, well, random, different (country)flags each time randomly chosen.

Not a fitting title for this quiz imo.

Nah, some are to show off national pride, some are to make themselves look important. And well more similar reasons
+1
Level 68
Apr 30, 2020
Some are to display a wide array of colours and symbols on normally a quadrilateral piece of cloth (sorry Nepal, Ohio and other non-quadrilateral flags) which is then hung up high on a thin metal pole and slapped by the wind countless times, giving the iconic "waving" effect.

As a patriotic and passionately pro-independence Scot, I have a satisfying grin to see that the same percentage of quizzers know both the Scottish Saltire and England flags. If I could suggest as a really difficult challenge, you could sub the 'Lion Rampant of Scotland' flag for the Saltire. I don't imagine many people recognising it unless they've seen Scottish fans at sporting events.

yea, since scotland and england are countries (yes they are, just not sovereign... it is the UNITED kingdom and these are the countries that are united, and northern ireland) I expected the other subnational ones to be aswell. (The description for them in itself is correct though). I was thinking of stuff some considered countries and others not, like western sahara and palestine.

I'm curious what non-authoritative committee took it upon themselves to give Buddhism a flag that won't allow anyone to approach Zen?
+1
Level 54
Aug 26, 2021
That would be Sri Lanka, specifically a flag committee in Sri Lanka in 1885. Sri Lanka is a Theravada Buddhist country so Zen doesn't really come into it at all.

It's supposed to represent the aura the Buddha supposedly emanated when he attained enlightenment, and the last band is supposed to represent the other five colours combined into a single colour, however that works.
