question nr 1: please, accept "Francia", "Frankish Kingdom", or "Frankland", for it was not France yet
+2

Totally agree. Analogously, Augustus, Caligula, und Septimius Severus also have been rulers of "France" but for some reasons "Roman Empire" is the main answer. ;-)

Frank and Francia will work now.

Only for Clovis, and "France" is just the modern term for Frankia anyway. Hell, Alfred wasn't even king of England, he was King of Wessex, but I'm not complaining, because... well, close enough, innit?

Dammed tough. Nowhere near the average of 17.

On seeing the answers there are a couple I should have got but 5 I would never have got.

Consider changing "Hedwig" to "Jadwiga". English language texts now mostly use her Polish name, whether history books or wikipedia. Hedwig most people associate with the owl from Harry Potter.

Agree with that. Even Poles didn't hear about somebody like Hedwig. Her name was Jadwiga of Poland.

Nice one; Carthage took me a while to guess, but I thought "Hasdrubal" sounded a bit like Hannibal so I gave it a try.

Same logic here, except with "Hamilcar." How did 43% of people get that one? Did they just guess well like us?

Dido was the clue for me, she is pretty famous in Roman poetry and literature (e.g. Aeneid).

Hamilcar Barca is the legendary founder of Barcelona, so if you've been there, you might know it. Also, Dido is pretty well known. I've also read Salammbo, by Flaubert, which takes place in Carthage, and references some of these figures. We all have different knowledge. When somebody knows something you don't, it doesn't mean they cheated, wildly guessed, or have some sort of freakish abnormal knowledge. It just means that people have different histories and interests.

Do Habsburg Monarchy and Holy Roman Empire work?
+2
Level 78
Feb 22, 2021
Holy Roman Empire shouldn't count. Maria Teresia was never the regent of the HRE (unlike her husband, Franz I.), and neither was Franz Joseph. Habsburg might be correct but who would try Habsburg before Austria?

The Habsburg Monarchy (at its peak) ruled quite a lot more than Austria and also (especially before said peak) did not rule all of Austria, so it's actually a much more accurate answer... but people do tend to shorten the name for convenience and it's like.. close enough? I would definitely accept Habsburg Monarchy but I certainly can't imagine someone who typed that struggling to come up with Austria as an answer.

I think Great Britain and UK should count for England. I said England eventually, but anyone that says the other two mean to put the right answer

My nitpick would be that only two of the English monarchs actually ruled England. Æthelred was the first king of a united English realm: while Alfred laid much of the groundwork to bring the Saxon realms under one crown, he was only ever king of Wessex. Since there's plenty of English Kings to pick from, why not include one of the Plantagenets, for example?
