But it's an unbroken urban environment of suburbs, offices and factories. To my mind distance is irrelevant - if there's no farms/forests/mountains between you, you're one big megacity.

The thing is, it thins out between cities from Boston to Washington. The suburbs between Los Angeles and Riverside form a wide, uniformly dense carpet of development. It doesn't narrow down to a 2-mile thread or become quasi-rural at all.

The methodology of what gets to be a separate city / urban area and not seems...odd. McKinney, TX is widely considered an exurb of Dallas, and it's certainly less distinct from Dallas than Fort Worth is. If McKinney and Denton are separate urban areas, Fort Worth-Arlington certainly should be as well. Warner Robins, GA is another weird choice, as it's pretty much seen as "Macon - Warner Robins" in GA.

I finally did it! I was able to name all 500, it took a lot of effort. It was hard trying to figure out what was considered to be a city in this quiz since so many big cities were lumped into metro areas. A tip to people trying to beat this quiz; start close to where you live as these places will be fresh in your memory and then spread out. if you can try working in an order state by state. For me, I did Alaska and the Hawaii and then worked west to east. great job on this quiz though, creator. It was a huge challenge. I also definitely learned something.

Interesting article! I think it's interesting how metro areas vary depending on who you asked. I just kind of assumed that The Woodlands would be a part of the Houston metro rather than its own thing, for instance. I think a big part of the underguessed metros is that they are overshadowed by larger cities that are more likely to come to mind first when thinking of a certain region.

As an aside, I feel like LA's metro area can get quite weird because the counties in Southern California are so big. The fact that Greater LA has parts of it like Needles that are over a 4 hour drive away from LA, but less than 2 hours away from Las Vegas, is very bizarre. Of course, that's a very small part of the region, but it still highlights a big flaw in how the US defines metro areas at the county level imo.

Perhaps the solution is making the counties smaller, because the same issue doesn't seem so pronounced in eastern cities

As much as I love that my "small town" of Burlington VT is on the map, it doesn't have a population of 100,000. Burlington has a population of about 40,000. That's the big city here, it doesn't make a national list like this. If you're going by urban sprawl, saw on the map there is a South Burlington, and combined that would be incorrect. There is no such thing as an urban sprawl here in Vermont. They are two distinct towns. Even with college students, it tops out at 50,000, less than half as what it is shown. Yourm source is wrong
